In 1984, a cult carried out the largest biological attack in U.S. history by spreading salmonella on food and doorknobs in a town in Oregon. The goal was to make people too sick to vote so the cult could win a local election and take control of the town.

To do this, commune leaders contaminated salad bars at ten restaurants in The Dalles with Salmonella enterica Typhimurium. The attack sickened 751 people and hospitalized 45, but fortunately caused no deaths. The idea was to make enough residents too ill to vote so that Rajneeshee-backed candidates, supported by newly registered outsiders, could take over the local government.

Instead, the attack sparked outrage and mobilized the community to vote against them in greater numbers. It also drew national attention to the vulnerabilities of public health and the dangers posed by fringe groups willing to use dangerous tactics for political gain.

Investigators from the Oregon Public Health Division and the CDC traced the outbreak to the Rajneeshee commune. In 1985, two senior leaders, Ma Anand Sheela (the group’s spokesperson and close aide to guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh) and Ma Anand Puja, were indicted for their roles in the attack.

Sheela and Puja both fled to Europe but were arrested in West Germany in 1986 and extradited to the U.S. They pleaded guilty to charges related to the bioterrorism plot and to separate crimes involving wiretapping and attempted murder within the commune. Sheela served about 29 months in federal prison; Puja served about two years.

The Rajneeshee movement itself rapidly collapsed in Oregon soon after. Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh was arrested on immigration charges, deported, and eventually returned to India. The ranch was abandoned, and the group never regained the political or social foothold it had sought in the U.S.
