Corrections staff across the northern region have been helping their communities during the floods. Twenty-six staff members have been redeployed to @NZcivildefence, working in partnership with Auckland Emergency Management to help people who had to evacuate their damaged homes.

People on community work sentences in the Nelson-Marlborough region have been building maara kai for whānau in need.
“Empowering people to grow their own kai gives them skills to help counter food insecurity for their whānau and community,” says Blenheim Service Manager Sharon.

In the past 18 months, men working in the nursery at Otago Corrections Facility have grown 35,000 plants for non-profit organisations like The Halo Project, with 60,000 more currently growing.

For the past four years, men at Tongariro Prison have been working with local iwi and conservation group Project Tongariro to restore the local native bush and riverbank.

A new gym and whānau centre called “The Hau Ora Hub” recently opened in Kaikohe to help rehabilitate former Ngāpuhi prisoners back into their community and iwi.

Men at Auckland Prison have assisted in the restoration of carvings for Te Whaiora Marae in Otara. The project lead by master carver Mate Webb, has helped many of the men connect with their Māori heritage.

He’s an eight-week-old Working Cocker Spaniel about to start learning to sniff out tobacco. After about 12 months of training, he’ll be ready to get to work keeping our prisons safe and contraband free.🐾
