Braden Smith - Bob Cousey Award Winner (-120)
BetOnline/Caesars/DK
Collab w/ @shmoneycbb
Smith is the life and soul of Purdue's team and the offense runs completely through him, whether it be distributing or scoring. Smith had the #2 assist rate in the country last season, where he averaged 8.7 apg. With another year of chemistry built in Matt Painter's system and key portal additions, Smith is primed to repeat as the Bob Cousey Award winner.
Big man Trey Kaufman-Renn returns for his senior season as Smith's sidekick. TKR is one of the most efficient big men in the nation and led the Big Ten in usage and was top six in the nation in true shooting percentage. TKR averaged 20+ points last season, most of which came off of a Smith assist and we can expect an encore of that this season. Add in another key returner in sniper Foster Loyer, who shoots 44.4% from downtown and has hit 197 career threes and Smith has both a true paint and three point threat to feed.
Now Purdue adds Oscar Cluff, an All-Summit First Team member from South Dakota State to the mix. The paint bully averaged 17.1 ppg and shot over 63% from the field last year and is going to form a lethal frontcourt with TKR and gives Smith another paint option. Liam Murphy, a stretch 4 from North Florida, was a 41.6% shooter from deep last season and also makes his way to West Lafayatte. With these four threats, sophomores CJ Cox and Gicarri Harris will have room to slash and score.
Besides being the top facilitator in the country, Braden Smith is also one of the most efficient scorers at the PG position and contributes all over the floor. Smith averaged 15.6 ppg on 42.8% shooting and shot 38.1% from three. He especially dominates when facing drop coverage and will have multiple opportunities to expose that this season. Smith also averaged 4.5 rpg and 2.2 spg.
Another reason to back Smith is the schedule and spotlight that will be on Purdue. They have showcase games against Alabama, Memphis, Iowa State, Marquette, and Auburn, in addition to the always tough Big 10 schedule. With Purdue primed to be a Top 10 team all season, Braden Smith will have the stats and eyes on him to repeat as the best PG in the nation.
