Keep this in mind no matter where you live: for the next few years, do NOT follow any medical or scientific advice coming from the USA. As long as Trump or his buddies are in power, you'll only get crack-pot bullshit.
Trust the doctors and scientists in your own countries.
If a woman wearing a “Release the Epstein Files” shirt makes you angry enough to join a group of men in beating the shit out of her, I’m going to assume you’re all fucking pedophiles too.
The last 24 hours have seen the Trump administration commit to live streaming the firing squad execution of a man in a wheelchair and openly side with Putin, in humiliating fashion. This is the lowest moral point for America since the days of slavery.
I find it odd that I have to explain this, but clearly there is a need.
Hegseth's willingness to livestream an execution has nothing to do with the sentence. Whether you are for capital punishment or against it (like I am), Nidal Hasan was convicted and sentenced to death by a court-martial. There is no ambiguity about the sentence, and in a country that permits capital punishment, it is legal and, given his crimes, perhaps even justified.
An execution that is livestreamed, however, is a government-produced snuff movie. It can inure us to state violence and feed our worst instincts and bloodlust. It is not the hallmark of a civilized country. Indeed, we have previously condemned countries that carry out public executions.
We have a justice system to maintain public order, protect rights and liberties, deter crime, and punish wrongdoing. It is not about revenge, humiliating prisoners, satisfying a public baying for blood, or providing material for watch parties with popcorn.
Pete Hegseth is dragging us back into medieval times, where civilization and empathy have little meaning. Nidal Hasan committed horrific crimes and was sentenced to death, but do we have to make ourselves worse people in the process?
Brazil’s presidential election is heading to a runoff after a surprise first-round victory for right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro who will face leftist incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after neither secured more than 50% of the vote, the threshold required to win outright. https://t.co/XTZPySDhJd
I see Madonna is pissing everybody off again.
Good.
Gen X checking in:
Were some of y’all born yesterday?
You’re clutching your pearls because Madonna is 68, wearing lingerie, fishnets and thigh-high boots like she suddenly lost her mind at bingo.
THIS IS MADONNA.
She rolled around on the VMA stage in a wedding dress in 1984.
She gave us Like a Prayer.
Vogue.
Erotica.
Truth or Dare.
Justify My Love.
Ray of Light.
Confessions.
She made Evita, Who’s That Girl, A League of Their Own and Desperately Seeking Susan.
She reinvented herself so many damn times that entire generations of pop stars are still borrowing from the blueprint.
And now the woman who spent 40+ years telling society to go fuck itself is supposed to hit 68 and start dressing like somebody’s meemaw because you got uncomfortable with her aging?
Fuck that.
Prince never needed permission to be Prince.
Bowie never needed permission to be Bowie.
Madonna doesn’t need permission to be Madonna.
And bookmark this post:
The day Madonna dies, half the people dragging her today will suddenly post “We lost an icon 💔” and spend a week explaining how she changed music, fashion, sexuality and pop culture.
I’m not waiting for her obituary to give her her flowers.
Wear the corset.
Wear the fishnets.
Piss people off.
You’re fucking Madonna.
The most revealing image in American politics right now may be that White House state dinner. Political power, billionaire wealth, Fox News personalities and CCP officials all drinking and dining together and yucking it up while millions of Americans absorb the consequences of decisions made by people in that room.
They manufacture division for everyone else. At the top, the club looks remarkably small. They’re all having a ball.
It's important to learn math not because you may need to do long division as an adult, but because it promotes rigorous thinking. IMO, history and causal inference are among the most important subjects a young person can study — math being central to the second.
A significant problem in public discourse right now is people's inability to critically evaluate causal claims (e.g., vaccines cause autism, deporting immigrants will solve the housing crisis, etc.). The less able people are to critically evaluate causal claims, the worse our democracy functions because people can be preyed upon for votes. You should promote anything that improves rigorous thinking, even if it doesn't have market value. In fact, we should stop thinking of education only in the context of what improves the economy.
IMO, this is distinct from knowing your own address (which Huang can avoid because he's wealthy). Memorizing facts like this may or may not be important, but it's distinct from rigorous thinking.
Yann LeCun: we are not going to get human-level intelligence or AGI by just scaling LLMs.
“There’s absolutely no way in hell.”
“The idea that we’re gonna have a country of geniuses in a data center, that’s complete BS.”
“It may feel like you have a PhD sitting next to you.”
“But it’s not a PhD.”
“It’s a system with gigantic memory and retrieval ability, not one that can invent solutions to new problems.”
For shame. The president of the United States goes to the United Nations and threatens genocide against a UN member state in front of the world.
This is where we’re at.
There's a sickness to this demented administration that isn't worth investigating... They're criminals with a level of influence that must be taken away immediately.
For the umpteenth time: Quit trying to analyze Trump. Quit trying to figure out why he says and does the things he says and does. I’m so fucking sick of listening to some panel on CNN try to discuss his latest bizarre pronouncement like he’s some normal human being. Stop that. This isn’t complicated- He’s not a normal human being. He’s a sociopath. He lies as he breathes. He’s an idiot. He’s a Russian asset. He gets off on being cruel. He’s never been held accountable for anything he’s done his entire life. He’s a horrible person. And he’s the biggest fucking crybaby who’s ever lived. That’s it.
