Last week, 47 students enjoyed an unforgettable residential trip to Germany's Black Forest. Despite the heatwave, they embraced every opportunity, from tobogganing and Europa-Park to Freiburg. Their resilience, teamwork and appreciation of nature were inspiring.

This week, the Year 9 WildEd group began work on the Community Garden, planting herbs and preparing space for a container pond. We also decorated bird boxes and bug hotels to hang next week. A very successful morning!

Year 8 students have made a strong start on their bug sculptures. After weeks of observational drawings, studying Christopher Marley, and designing hybrid species, they’re now using recycled cardboard to build their creations, ready to add colour with paint next.

As part of #FishHeroes, we were excited to be selected by Alaska Seafood UK to receive canned pink salmon. We created new dishes, learned about fish’s health benefits, and made Buddy’s fishcakes — a big success! Thanks to all involved.

This week, the year 12 art students have been working on a printmaking technique where designs are carved into lino sheets using gouges. They applied ink with a roller to the raised surface, then pressed it onto paper to create these lovely prints!

KS5 Languages students attended a University of Bristol lecture on musique francophone contemporaine—from Congolese rap to Quebec folk and Algerian raï. In 2024, over 100 million people worldwide listened to French music. Merci, Université de Bristol!

This week we ran our second WildEd workshop with Action For Conservation volunteers. We storyboarded wildlife challenges and solutions, explored natural colours around the Grassy Knoll, and shared ideas to increase plant biodiversity.

Monday 2 February, we celebrate World Hijab Day, themed ‘What It Means to Me’. Assemblies have been run, students may wear any colour hijab next week, and others can try one. Students will be able to share what the hijab means to them.

Cotham played their second chess tournament of the year on this week at Bristol Grammar School, with three teams from Years 7–13. The A and B teams finished 15th and 16th of 20 in a tough upper section, while the C team placed an impressive 3rd of 10. Well done all! ♟️👏

The Year 11 Art students get the chance to express themselves during a project about IDENTITY. The project explores objects and possessions, self-portraits, and locations, to which the students get to tailor uniquely to themselves.

We held the first WildEd workshop, where students worked with conservation experts to learn about habitats, the challenges animals face, and possible solutions. Next, we’ll explore how to support the environment in and around Cotham.
