It has been strange to attend games without him. I’ve enjoyed the games, but I miss my Dad. And grieving while rising and shouting has been new, sad, and special in its way. Like he’s been with me at these games.

Tonight, it ends, and I’m all mixed up about it.

My Dad, Steve, was an incredible BYU sports fan. He loved the Cougars.

In October, Dad found out his health condition was terminal. Within 5 minutes, he looked at me and asked, “Do you think I’ll get to see AJ just one time?”

I hoped so. He did not get his chance to watch AJ.

Dad bought Cougar Club for the first time, anticipating a fun season. He would’ve loved the seats, been fully on the exhausted/exhilarated roller coaster of this team, and enjoyed the energy of the Marriott Center.

The Trick or Treat Cougars in the NIT? Simple. I don’t want it. Only 1 player in the history of BYU basketball has won a NIT game and then subsequently won a NCAA tournament game. Jeff Chatman. Winning in the NIT is almost a kiss of death for future seasons for the Y.
