Real talk.
For the last 6 years, I’ve not really enjoyed Battlefield. There were a handful of moments where I had fun, but it’s largely been disappointing.
When Call of Duty: Warzone dropped in 2020, I started playing it with my friends and we had way more fun than we’d had during our time playing Battlefield V. That was probably the major turning point for me, when I stepped away from playing my favourite game and starting playing its biggest competitor. An added issue was that I’d built a YouTube channel almost exclusively based on Battlefield over the previous 8 years, so I not only left behind my favourite game, but I chose to completely 180 my content onto a different game, which was an insane risk looking back.
With Vince Zampella at the helm of Battlefield now, it makes me sit up and pay attention. An industry titan with a huge back catalogue of successes certainly gives this next game a fighting chance. There have also been a few developers that have rejoined the team working on the game as well after having departed during previous games’ lifecycles, which gives me a little more confidence. But whilst I want to be excited for the next Battlefield game based upon this, I’ve got to keep myself grounded. The last two titles have largely been a failure. I got majorly baited by the incredible marketing for Battlefield 2042; it turned out to be one of the worst games in the franchise, missing core pillars of Battlefield gameplay replaced with features that felt shoe-horned in to try and turn it into a shooter cash cow. I played it for two weeks after launch and couldn’t stomach any more.
I don’t have any real confidence that EA can deliver a quality product at launch either. The company needs to prove to me that it can bring a game to market that works properly out of the gate. The last truly smooth launch was Battlefield 1, in 2016. In truth, Battlefield has never been a franchise that launched well… Battlefield 4’s horrific launch issues still loom large and that game dropped over a decade ago now.
Until I get hands on with the next game in 2025 (and I’m talking about the *actual* game, not an alpha/beta test), I don’t think I’ll be able to properly convince myself to be excited for it. Trust is earned.
I’ll be following any Battlefield news closely between now and a proper reveal, whenever that comes. I’m not going to tell anyone else to temper their expectations, you can all make your own decisions. But remember that anything and everything EA decides to reveal is done for marketing purposes; read between the lines and understand that what they choose to say is carefully constructed to be as positive as possible. Why do you think they chose now to release concept art and limited info? To get you to sit up and pay attention after a disastrous previous game in the franchise, to reset your “hype-o-meters” and to get the attention of investors.
Here’s hoping the next Battlefield game is one we can all enjoy ✌️
