@hjwakerley Has anyone written a paper on who Mansory's customers are and why they think owning a car with their...additions... is a good idea?
I think there's a real social science piece here as, to most civilised folk, the "revised," cars are, at best, extremely challenging to the eye.
@AutoPap@thealexbear I bought a 1 owner 1980s 911 in 2006. It's worth ~5x what I paid for it and, in cash terms (value minus bills minus cost) it has has cost money. Adding inflation = costing more money.
It has, however, been great fun and much cheaper than buying a new/newish Golf every decade
@AutoPap@thealexbear I agree! There are enough parts on these cars that are virtually guaranteed to fail (dynamic engine mounts) that are equal / greater than the warranty cost. Plus coverage for larger items (engines) failure of which, whilst rare, isn't unknown.
@sniffpetrol Is the papal interest in the car as it makes neither black nor white smoke so is unlikely to cause cardinal offence or incense bystanders?
@hjwakerley My 1988 911 3.2 Cabrio.
No, it's not very good but it's just as I would have specified, I bought it from the first owner and I have had it almost 20 years.
5 mins after I bought it I got the call to say my father was (unexpectedly) in hospital. That story didn't end as well.
@DanNeidle@ConcernedofBri1@paullewismoney I was visiting my mother last week and she was having her garden fence changed. The fencer was restricting his workload to keep his turnover under VAT-registration as the impact of going over are too great...and he can't grow his business to a size where it's absorbable.
@SimonCarGuy@AutoPap My mother had an E91 for 13 years. She loved the car and her dealer treated her like visiting royalty.
When it was time to replace, last year, I suggested she look at another BMW and her response was, "I don't think I can own anything that ugly."
Bring on the Neue Klasse!
@archer_rs He has clearly read no (or maybe just the first half) of Douglas Adams:
“He was a dreamer, a thinker, a speculative philosopher... or, as his wife would have it, an idiot.”
@sniffpetrol They did put some through rental fleets in 2008; I carry considerable guilt for how “robustly,” I drove one for which I was the first renter.
I feel less guilt for the Vectra I had / ran in the next week (appropriately registered AN08…) which somehow still seems to be alive.
