Are you going to be working on Election Day and not sure if you will make it to the polls during their open hours to vote from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.?

Employees in California are eligible for up to two hours of paid time off for the purpose of voting if they do not have sufficient time outside of working hours to vote.

Employees who need time off to vote can take as much time as they need to vote, but are only eligible for 2 hours of paid time.

If you are three working days before the election and you think you will need time off to vote, notify your employer at least two working days prior to the election.

Why are tax changes limportant?
These types of local tax initiatives, like raising a sales tax by half a cent and imposing a 4% tax on mansions, can help pay for community programs like affordable housing, emergency response, and healthcare services. Funding for these services is especially critical given the budget cuts made by Republicans in the federal budget bill H.R. 1.

Seeing a local tax measure on your ballot may seem boring, but did you know that wealthy property owners, developers, and investors see power in raising the voter threshold needed to pass local tax measures?

Proposition 43 would do just that: it would amend the California Constitution so that citizen-led local special tax initiatives could only pass if two-thirds of the voting population voted to pass it. Currently, tax changes like these only need a simple majority (50% of the vote +1) to pass.

🚨Due to USPS process changes in California, mail that is dropped off at post offices and mail collection boxes more than 50 miles from a U.S. Postal Service regional hub is now collected the next day.

‼️This means that waiting until Election Day to mail back your ballot could potentially risk and invalidate your vote.

*Some counties in California offer Voting Centers, a location where you can register to vote, vote early and in-person, and return your ballot in your county no matter your address. A polling place is a specified, assigned voting location set by your county elections office based on your address and is typically open from 7 am to 8 pm on Election Day for in-person voting and ballot drop-off.
