We’re South Africa’s first open-to-the-public hub for ethical courage - part podcast studio, part people of courage community space, part youth programme.
How were the infamous "too-tall" locomotives approved?
In this clip, whistleblower Martha Ngoye explains how, while acting as PRASA CEO, she uncovered serious non-compliance in the Swifambo Rail Leasing contract and discovered that PRASA's legal department had been excluded from the process.

In this powerful excerpt from Courage Hub SA's ‘Talking Ethix’ series, former PRASA executives Martha Malebethe Ngoye, Group Executive: Legal, Risk and Compliance and Tiro Holele, Group Executive: Strategy, speak candidly with Courage Hub SA directors Cynthia Stimpel and Brendan Grealy about the personal and professional cost of exposing corruption.
Reflecting on the widespread looting of PRASA, Tiro describes it as "like a parent plotting against their own children" - a betrayal of the millions of South Africans who depend on public transport. The discussion reveals the challenges faced by those who stand up against wrongdoing, including alleged attempts to silence and overwhelm them. Recalling one encounter, a PRASA executive allegedly declared: "We have got state resources and we are going to out-litigate you." "They should be criminally charged!”
This is a story of courage, accountability and the ongoing fight to protect public institutions from corruption.

Saturday night, Courage Hub SA hosted it's first fundraising event at Theatre on the Square. It also showcased the exhibition that #cynthiastimpel has been developing over the past few months, giving guests a glimpse into the work we are doing at the Hub.
Guests began arriving from around 7pm. Nico Seakamela engaged audience members on our Ethics in Schools project, while @CraigeWynne spoke about the whistleblower and education databases we are building. Brendan Grealy chatted about the Courage Hub podcast series, and @cynthiastimpel shared insights into the whistleblowers featured in the exhibition, as well as her broader advocacy work. She also sold a few copies of her book, Hijackers on Board, which tells the story of how she blew the whistle at SAA.
The evening centred around ALBIE SACHS: Fathers, Sons and Soft Vengeance - a one-man play celebrating the remarkable life of anti-apartheid activist and former Constitutional Court Judge Albie Sachs. Written by Gail Louw, directed by Fiona Ramsay, and performed brilliantly by Graham Hopkins, the production was exceptional.
Then, just five minutes before curtain-up, heads turned towards the staircase leading down from Nelson Mandela Square as Albie, his wife Vanessa, and their son Oliver entered the theatre. Brendan had been rehearsing a speech thanking Justice Sachs in absentia and suddenly had to adjust it to thank him in person. The atmosphere in the theatre immediately lifted.
Graham’s performance was extraordinary. Afterwards, when Brendan asked Albie how he felt seeing a play about his life for the first time, he paused and replied quietly: “I’m still shaking.” The @CourageHubSA Team also had the pleasure of meeting Vanessa and Oliver - who, incidentally, did his own voice-over for the production.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out to support us. Alexi Bezos shared a wonderful story about his late father, George Bizos, and his mother. Jane Lipman offered valuable suggestions on potential funding partners. Kathy Berman, who helped us set up the exhibition, continues to become a passionate supporter of #couragehubsa, alongside Janet Fox and husband Rick van der Poel. My late brother Chris’s wife Sue Grealy was there, as were Patrick Fitzgerald, Christine Hobden from Wits School of Governance, Craig Polkinghorne, Martha Malebethe Ngoye and many others.
Thank you to Daphne Kuhn and all for making the evening so memorable.

What does it cost to tell the truth in South Africa?
In this episode we speak to former PRASA executives - and whistleblowers - Martha Ngoye and Tiro Holele.
From inside the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, they exposed unlawful contracts, billions at risk and testified at the Zondo Commission.
Speaking out came at a price!
Dismissals.
Court battles.
And a fight that’s now reached the Constitutional Court of South Africa.
This isn’t just about corruption.
It’s about courage.
And the cost of doing the right thing.

What happens when a credible, experienced professional becomes the victim of fraud - and the system meant to protect her doesn’t respond?
In this episode of Talking Ethix produced by Courage Hub SA, Deshnee Govender, a senior public servant, shares her deeply personal experience of bank-related fraud - and the uphill battle that followed.
Her story goes beyond individual loss. It highlights a broader systemic challenge affecting millions of South Africans: gaps in accountability, uneven power dynamics, and the reality that not everyone has the means to fight back.
From victim to advocate, Deshnee’s journey raises critical questions for institutions, leaders, and society at large.
This conversation is about more than fraud.
It’s about ethical courage - and the kind of systems we are willing to accept.

Cynthia Stimpel didn’t hesitate.
While many whistleblowers say they wouldn’t do it again, her answer was an unequivocal yes.
Raised with strong values, she couldn’t ignore what she uncovered at SAA. She turned to her peers, hoping they would stand together. Instead, they stepped back and told her: “It’s your department - you deal with it.”
What followed is a story of courage, conviction, and the cost of doing the right thing.

Here's the latest episode of Cynthia Stimpel's interview.
If leaders want trust, they must create safe spaces for truth.
Courageous conversations don’t happen by accident - they happen by design.
The real question is: what are we still not talking about?

Welcome back - we dive deeper into the realities of whistleblowing in South Africa.
In sectors built on trust - particularly banking and financial services - integrity is not optional, it’s foundational.
In this compelling excerpt from the Cynthia Stimpel Podcast, we explore the reality of whistleblowing in South Africa: the personal cost, the professional risk, and the courage required to speak up when it matters most.
For organisations, the message is clear: governance frameworks and compliance structures mean little without a culture that genuinely protects and values those who raise concerns.
This conversation challenges leaders to reflect - are we creating environments where truth is supported, or silenced?

Welcome back for Episode 4 of the @cynthiastimpel podcast. The real problem isn't just wrongdoing... it's the silence that protects it.
Those involved in wrongdoing.
What they do not expect is the silence from colleagues.
Very often these colleagues know something is wrong. They may even quietly express support in private conversations. But fear is a powerful force inside organisations.
At Courage Hub SA we discuss this fear.
