Welcome to CovEd Stories: an account dedicated to the stories of what is actually happening in Utah schools during the pandemic.
If you are a Utah teacher with a story to tell, please follow the link in the bio.
My students' families were some of the most vocal in demanding SLCSD return to in-person learning.
This whole time, they've been travelling and gathering outside their households.
They clearly have no issue putting my life or other community members at risk.

CDC: here’s how to open schools safely UT Legislature: works on passing a bill that takes away mandatory masks in schools and raises the case limit before virtual instruction to 2% of the school. #uted#utpol#safeschoolssavelives
A district judge has ruled that Utah’s children are not entitled under the state constitution to an in-person education.
That leaves how and where learning happens — including entirely online during the pandemic — up to each local school district.

Reminder about the new quarantine rules:
In schools, if you are masked when you are exposed to someone with COVID, you don't have to quarantine.
Many teachers are concerned about this policy and have observed its ineffectiveness in their classrooms.
@GraniteSchools Further, other districts have communicated to their employees that their FFCRA had been extended through March 15. My understanding is that this extension was optional and Granite opted not to. Why is that?
"I contract COVID and am under quarantine. @GraniteSchools HR informed me that I needed to use up all of my sick days while also teaching over Zoom for online learners and sub plans for in-person learners. "

@GraniteSchools To be clear, this is not consistently happening in your schools. Every teacher I talk to had a different policy explained to them at their site. Even for teachers who were taking sick leave, their administrators were often still asking them to be online for contract hours.
@GraniteSchools Please clarify. What is the protocol for teachers who contract COVID? How are their classes covered without them have to continue working from home? Are teachers being asked to use their sick leave?
"On January 5, I tried to go watch the Iron County School District Board meeting in person, but 3 of the 6 board members were maskless and several people watching also were maskless. So I left. That pretty much sums up how back to school is going."

Interesting fact: since March, 8.8% of people in Utah have contacted covid-19. More teachers than that have been infected just since August. Vaccines were promised and pushed back. Quarantines for classroom exposure stop today. We are expendable. #utpol#uted @DrAngelaCDunn
@BradWilsonGOP made it clear he considers teachers disposable in a dishonest, heartless political game.
The effects of this week's decisions will be felt for a long time. Teachers will feel it worse than any politician ever will. Our BIPOC communities will be hit the hardest.
@SpencerJCox @BradWilsonGOP @slcschools The problem is that this came at a cost. The hard work SLC teachers have put in has been devalued, our respect diminished, morale crushed. Attracting and retaining teachers in our district just got harder, and we’re going to feel it on the ground.
