Someone important recently told me to celebrate achievements and landmarks, no matter how small or big. After more than 16 years and innumerous games as a spectator at the Eden Gardens, today marks my first one as a journalist. Grateful to everyone who's been part of the journey.

Incredible scenes in Dhaka. After losing the first ODI, Australia have now lost their first 3 wickets for no run in the 2nd ODI against Bangladesh: a first for them, and only the 4th time ever in ODI cricket history that the scorecard has read 0/3.
@mishrit_vrtt As far as incentives for players is concerned, I am pretty sure the idea of playing yearly Test matches in front of 40-50k people in iconic venues would do a greater job than playing once at your T2/3 hometown where half of the crowd would be your friends and family
@mishrit_vrtt But I do see a correlation between empty stadiums for Test matches and a declining interest in the format. Fixing this by having dedicated Test centres won’t just be a short term fix. In fact, it might just arrest the slide.
@mishrit_vrtt You incentivise smaller associations to focus on the longer format (which I don’t believe they need incentives for tbh - Ranji Trophy is an ecosystem in and of itself) while not diluting the quality of the product that is Test cricket
@mishrit_vrtt Also, the domestic structures in place at all age group levels are strong enough. They will keep producing red ball cricketers. Maybe there could be scope for experimentation with allotment of venues such that Ranji Trophy winners get to host a Test match next season
@mishrit_vrtt The crowds would be insane. And it would take up that aspirational space in players minds, which playing in front of 5,000 people at Mullanpur can never replicate
@mishrit_vrtt The major centres have history attached to them which the new venues lack. It doesn’t help with the narrative when Kolkata doesn’t get to host an Australia Test match once in 25 years since that 2001 epic. But if it did every 4 years?
@mishrit_vrtt If anything, 5 Test centres with good crowds consistently will become an aspirational goal for players around the country to look up to. “I want to become good enough to play a Test match for India in Mumbai/Kolkata/etc.” Will help with coherent narrative building
@mishrit_vrtt The Test cricketers coming from the smaller centres today aren’t coming because of that one Test match hosted in their city in the last 8 years. Which anyway barely anyone watched from the stands.

The single on 19.5 by Washington Sundar to complete his half-century with Kagiso Rabada at the other end was so poor. Surely, he had to keep the strike?
