Health and Science Critic
Promotes robust debate and mere tolerance, allowing and promoting unresolved differences
The smaller of the two groups (35 healthy controls vs 135 depressed patients ) determines the power to detect differences when they are present. This study is tiny and results are unlikely to be precisely cross-validated in a larger sample. We are a long way from a biomarker for major depression.
In this study, fMRI images of people who had been repeatedly scanned over time were analyzed: 135 people with major depressive disorder and 37 healthy participants. 5/12
@jonathanstea takes an authoritarian approach to declaring good and bad science, rather than educating lay persons how to decide for themselves. A cronie of Liberal Senator Stan Kutcher
We are excited to have @jonathanstea on the relaunch of #DBS in September.
Dr Jon has been fighting medical disinformation, and his new book, Mind the Science, is a seminal read.
Please give him a follow...
The anti-psychiatry BS we are up against has a vast following. It will be challenging to de-implement it and to re-establish mental health care where roles for drugs and psychotherapy are accepted.
Conspiracy theorist Jon Rappoport’s Psychiatric Crimes has almost 70,000 followers: “All 300 mental disorders. They’re all hoaxes. Because there are no defining tests of any kind to back up the diagnosis.
“You can sway and tap dance and bloviate all you like and you won’t escape the noose. We are looking at a science that isn’t a science. It’s a fraud. A rank fraud.”
Follow me if you reject this nonsense and support evidence-based treatment. https://t.co/XWDC94RyjH
I have reviewed the literature and you are spreading lies and information. I am not a psychiatrist but an expert on clinical trials and metaanalysis and systemic reviews.
@CoyneoftheRealm The problem about #ECT is that psychiatrists deny it's permanent cognitive side-effects, which can be devastating. This also leads to promising alternative approaches (non-convulsive electrotherapy, magnetic seizure therapy, burst suppression anesthesia) being unexplored.
The FDA's rejection of MDMA as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder today is a blow to drug activists, members of Congress, and veterans who waged an expensive campaign for the psychedelic to be considered an effective and safe treatment. it is a victory for those of us who believe it is inappropriate and corrupt to lobby the FDA concerning specific products and that politics should not trump evidence.

Predictably, Todd Kashdan removed this comment from the blog. Todd believes only good people should be allowed to participate in discussions and anyone who is critical of him is a bad person.
Todd Kashdan is truly weird and should explain why he lost power and the support of many followers after a losing an expensive legal appeal of George Mason University barring him from accepting female graduate students. Note that he is no longer a member of the GWU clinical program. Talking to female grad students in a hot tub about his experiences getting fellatio in Germany is offensive, not effective dissent. Newspaper accounts are available on request. Barbara Fredrickson rejects him. Beloved positive psychology guru Chris Peterson considered him a jerk and asked me to take him to a Korean-only bar in Philly to vent after Todd declared himself the heir to Marty Seligman. Would Dominic Packer and Jay Van Bavel invite Todd to a shrimp on the barbie pool or hot tub party? https://t.co/JM1WgMJKCf

We need to brace ourselves for a struggle against terrifying obstacles, both of our own making and imposed by the natural world. And the first step is to recover from the mass delusion that is positive thinking.”--Barbara Ehrenreich
Your effort to deny the life-saving benefits of current #ECT are dishonest and inconsistent with lots of data. Please stop doing patients why can benefit injustice and get off your soapbox.
Having elocuted 1,000s of dogs, and then some pigs, #ECT was first tested on a 'schizophrenic' with no known family (so dispensable), without capacity to understand the procedure, & no consent. He interjected partway through - they ignored him & continued 'shocking' him! #NSAD24
But some "experts" tell us in predatory journals that ADHD is a social fiction and meds are just performance enhancers, not levelers of the playing field. "Nonscientists at Groningen Declare That ADHD Does Not Exist!" https://t.co/qNKh0ercrP
Every year ADHD diagnosis is delayed will have a significant and direct impact on a person’s education, work, self-esteem, health, and relationships.
I hope the new government make this a priority.

.@IndianaUniv released a review today by a law firm hired to investigate events in Dunn Meadow, @CooleyLLP. This morning, I interviewed President Whitten and the lead attorney Rebekah Donaleski.
Story will be updated - lots of interview to go through

Naomi Fisher ignores that rejection sensitivity was in use decades before William Dodson appropriated it and called it his. It is a core interpersonal symptom of atypical depression and seasonal affective disorder. https://t.co/QvyPuPou8C
Few recent medical school graduates have Carl Elliott’s privileged option of moving to Scotland to study philosophy to avoid the moral injury of practicing medicine. Are physicians lesser human beings because they went into practice in the community, industry, or academic settings? Would independent observers find that practicing physicians are “harder, meaner, and more entitled” than Carl Elliott? @DrNancyOlivieri https://t.co/hKXl6tLimA
“Why Can’t I Get IRBs to Stop Approving Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trials?” ― Bioethicist Carl Elliott
Do members of IRB committees have an ethical responsibility to block the approval of RCTs because they are placebo-controlled? Is Elliott a brilliant disruptor or merely suffering delusions of grandeur? https://t.co/hKXl6tLimA
