When I was a young EOD team Member, I broke our only robot when I was putting it away in the truck after an IED call. I was moving too quickly, and stored it incorrectly causing an antenna to snap.

Sure enough, we got another IED call shortly after. My Team Leader told me to get the robot out and I had to inform him that I had broken it. He didn’t miss a beat “then get me in the bombsuit,” he said.

As I was dropping the visor on the helmet, the last step before he would head down range, he looked at me said, “if I die it’s on you.”

You can feel however you want about that comment, but in that moment I realized the importance of maintaining equipment and taking the extra 30 seconds to make sure stuff is done right.

It was one of the best and hardest lessons I’ve ever learned. The work we do in the military requires attention to detail and I’ve never forgotten that since. Also, he was fine. We still laugh about this story.
