Wrote about a Top 1 sporting event I’ve ever attended… seeing Messi (mostly do nothing, then briefly threaten to do something) in person, Spain’s metronomes metronoming, and other stray thoughts from “New York New Jersey Stadium”

Been wearing a Magic hat around Orlando the past couple days and keep getting strange men walking past whispering to me “Go Magic” like we are all part of a plot to overthrow the government
First big bet I ever won was the 2018/19 Magic to win the Southeast division at 20/1 (DJ Augustin, Vuc, AG, Fournier, Big Boss Terrence Ross).
Kids think we are going to Disneyworld today but we ACTUALLY going on a pilgrimage to honour the 42-40 7-seed ‘19 Magic! VAMOS ESPAÑA!
Nothing better than the ritual after a big win of ANNIHILATING online merch stores to commemorate the win.
Ferran Torres Barca jersey? Merino and Zubimendi Spain jerseys? $7.99 Spanish flag keychain? ALL STRAIGHT IN THE CART. VAMO
Have never seen a fanbase more gutted than Argentina fans at the stadium after this game. Hoards of men crying in stairwells. Brutal.
At the same time LFG Spain, boom!!! Cop it Enzo.
The streets of New York City are buzzing. Seeing a lot of Messi and Rodri but also a couple stray Bryce Young and Chris Olave jerseys.
The World Cup has always been about the NFC South.
@Zonal_Marking Good read M.C.
Thought Tuchel’s biggest sin was his team seemed totally exhausted yet he only made one sub before the 82nd minute, none before the 72nd.
Any plan seemed destined to fail if no one had the legs to execute it. Thought bulk subs were needed at the hydration break.
Maybe the right move for today but an indictment on De La Fuente he couldn’t build a system for this tournament that gets a top 5 midfielder in the world in his starting lineup.
Ronaldo starting for Portugal got a lot more attention, but Simon starting for Spain might be worse.
Spain have possibly the two best keepers in the world sitting on the bench because "vibes".
Now gonna face Mbappe, Olise and friends with a self-tied hand behind their back.
@AnthonyDabbundo Argentina and England both been pretty meek all tournament outside of England’s Croatia game. The international bar is just pretty low. Portugal won Euro 2016 and Argentina won the last World Cup without really playing all that well all tournament. France + Spain a tier above.
Thoughts on England-Norway…
*Bellingham is a bizarre player… you rarely feel his presence, until he pops up for the decisive moment, which he does with crazy consistency and regularity. A Heroic Moments merchant (compliment).
*Odegaard makes the right play every time, perfect blend of risk/threat and control.
*Saka total game changer. Gave England a (previously absent) coherent theory of attack - get the ball to Bukayo, have him draw two, and work from there. Like watching SGA in iso.
*Elliot Anderson is worth the $153 million. Ridiculous touch, control, passing range, composure, grit. The cross field driven lofts are inch perfect. Best player on the pitch.
*Tuchel was right - England were pretty poor overall, 7 shots and 0.31 xG in regulation was very meek, but it was largely because of him. Eze over Rogers made no sense - Arsenal are literally trying to sign Rogers because he’s better than Eze. Tuchel changed the defensive and midfield balance so frequently that no one had any rhythm or continuity. Finally got it right with the last two subs - Rogers and Spence gave the team the right balance.
@scottjwillis Saka brilliant, Scott. Swung the game giving England a reliable outlet / theory of attack.
Not looking forward to Elliot Anderson in a City jersey he is a boss.
Second time in three months hopping on a plane to see Declan Rice take down Haaland.
Vamos England
(*may not have successfully taken Haaland down the first time)
Walked out of the Etihad with @ShipTheJustice a month ago, abuse hurled at us for 90 minutes, beaten but armed with the confidence that Arsenal would ultimately triumph because of their grit, their quality, and a substantially easier remaining schedule.
