The Department of Labor just updated Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act, and it's going to negatively impact disabled workers. Let’s talk about it.

This new regulation ends and undermines several disability affirmative hiring actions that were previously required by DOL for all employers that receive federal contracts, as a condition of recieving federal funds.

Now, federal contractors are no longer required to work towards a goal of a workforce with at least 7% of disabled workers. That matters a lot, since the federal government is the largest employer of people with disabilities, including through contracts -- now those opportunities, specifically made for disabled candidates, can disappear.

Ending self-disclosure programs will make it much harder to accurately track data about federal disability employment, making it impossible to identify and address barriers.

And the new policy means some federal contractors will no longer be held accountable for complying with anti-disability discrimination law.

This post and the statement in our bio get into the specifics, but these new regulations are part of a massive effort by the Department of Labor and the federal government to end the major gains we've made towards disability employment.

Suffice to say: AAPD opposes and condemns these changes, and will keep you posted about other policies like it. We know that disabled workers contribute meaningfully to their workplaces, and employers that champion disability inclusion have better profits, productivity, and employee loyalty. No government policy can ever take that away.
