Mom of two beautiful girls, advocate for my daughter, Caitlin, & her access to healthcare & education, Social Work Case Manager for medically complex children
Thankful Chloe’s exam schedule was super light and we were able to take a surprise Christmas vacation to Disney and spend quality time together. The days before she goes to college are numbered as she’s now officially halfway finished with junior year.
Searching for the next breakthrough! Summer Ventures students at ASU are actively working in the lab to bioprospect for novel microbes.

Chloe and her co-authors from Summer Ventures of Science at Math at Appalachian State University presented their research today at SNCURCS 2025 on Elon’s campus.
Excited to take Chloe back to my roots of Elon University Saturday and watch her present her research from Summer Ventures of Science & Math at SNCURCS.
Busy week of academic accolades for our girl! Recognized at the BOE mtg Monday for her College Board National Recognition awards to National Honor Society Induction tonight.
Working hard on fractions yesterday to today when she had a meltdown during science with her nurse. Her reason “I don’t like to work.” Amen sister but we all have to do things we don’t like. And apparently that tantrum was just a bit of “bad luck.” #AAC#touchchat
At the closing ceremony for SVSM at App State, we learned that the staff and faculty voted for Chloe’s research group to win the Exemplary Research Award of 2025 and will be mentored by App State faculty as they go on to present their work at a NC undergrad research symposium.
Chloe’s been having a blast at Summer Ventures in Science and Math at Appalachian State University. Home for the weekend and back to Boone tomorrow to finish up her last two weeks wrapping up her research project.
Dropped Chloe off yesterday at App State for the next month. She’ll be bioprospecting for new yeast species, conducting research including genome sequencing, writing a research paper that she’ll present at the research symposium at the end of Summer Ventures in Science and Math.
Best of both worlds - she’s home schooled where she’s safe and has limited distractions and we’ve hired her retired EC teacher for tutoring. She’s finished her first chapter book, wrote a book report and completed a project on the houses of the characters.
When her NCSSM online course choices and alternates look more like college courses, Dad asks “are you sure you can sign up for these?” 🤯😂 Smart girls rule!
Chloe wrapped up her Honors Genetics and Biotechnology final project and presented it yesterday. I was astounded to learn there is a new technology that has the ability to remove genetic mutations. Can’t wait to see that spark expanded on at her NCSSM Summer Ventures App State.
The elated smile of a girl opening her acceptance email to North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Online program as well as their Summer Ventures program.
@LauraLoomer You were down for a few hours. There are 1000s out of power with all cell connections lost in Western NC. There are roads and bridges completely missing and it will take months to repair. 911 centers are not operational and no way to call for help.
