Unless you are planning to use the funds in the near-term, retirement accounts are hugely advantageous for tax savings. Max that sucker out before putting money in a taxable investment account.

2. IRA UP TO THE CONTRIBUTION LIMIT
Your limited 401(k) options may have high fees (check the expense ratios) and you could find better ones on your own. Small fee differences make a huge difference over time. In your IRA you have complete control over what you invest in.
