As both an artist AND a commissioner, I see this from both sides. I understand that artists have lives outside of art, can have bad periods, lose motivation or simply need more time. I feel that!

But if I pay for a commission upfront, I think it’s fair to expect the artist to eventually work on it and keep me updated. There’s a difference between “taking your time” and leaving a paid commission untouched for months with little to no communication.

If you don’t currently have the time or motivation to work on commissions, that’s okay. But then you shouldn’t take someone’s money upfront and make them wait indefinitely.

Patience is part of commissioning an artist, but so is respect for the person who paid you. Both sides deserve that respect.
