Today, June 26, 2026, would have marked my 20th year in banking. Perhaps I would have been a Branch Manager or still at the headquarters in Marina as a Brand Manager. But my employment came to an end on January 6, 2020.

Looking back today, I am deeply grateful for everything I learned during my banking career, and indeed from every place I have worked. Some environments were supportive, others were challenging, but each one taught me lessons that shaped who I am.

If you are currently employed, always keep one eye on your exit date. It will surely come - whether unexpectedly, through redundancy, resignation, or retirement. The question is: Will you be ready?

Start preparing today. Learn a new skill. Learn several skills. Go back to school if necessary. Learn a trade. Invest in your personal development now, not later.

Have a clear plan. A definite chief aim. Decide who you want to become. Think about it. Speak it. Write it down. Declare it if you must. Surround yourself with like-minded colleagues, friends, or your spouse who will encourage your growth and keep you accountable.

Many people remain in 9-to-5 jobs, not because they lack potential, but because fear keeps them there. Yet your job can provide the financial stability to experiment, take calculated risks, and build something on the side. Your weekends, days off, and evenings are valuable opportunities, don't waste them.

Wake up the talent within you. Too many gifted artists, bakers, writers, photographers, designers, and creators have buried their gifts because of the temporary comfort that a monthly salary provides.

Don't be deceived. The comfort you enjoy today may be temporary because you do not own the company. Not everyone is called to be an entrepreneur, but everyone should strive to become an investor and build assets beyond their salary.

While I worked in the bank, my working hours were often from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. But when I got home, I wore different hats. I became an artist. I painted. I made yoghurt. I baked. I made shoes. I developed many other skills over the years.

So when it was finally time to leave the bank, the transition was not frightening - it was natural. I wasn't starting from scratch; I had been building my future all along.

Your salary pays today's bills, but your skills can secure tomorrow's freedom. Start building that future today.
