The easiest non-destructive way is to verify gold’s weight + dimensions + density, then add one instrument test:
Weigh it precisely and measure dimensions (calipers). Gold’s density is ~19.32 g/cm³, so real pieces fall into a tight range.
Ultrasonic thickness test (common in bullion shops): checks sound speed through the bar/coin to detect internal voids or different metals.
XRF scan (X-ray fluorescence): reads surface composition quickly (good, but can miss a plated core if the plating is thick).
