Without trying to be funny, the Nigerian dream is to game the system to achieve a life free from want, worry, and the pressures of responsibility.
It is about making money without effort and getting things for free without working for them. This is why you see people who travel to places with plenty of opportunity to achieve things with hard work still being caught up in crime and fraud.
One could argue that it is the same for all humans, but in Nigeria, it is cultural. We praise and worship those whom we think achieved this by being "smart" and not those who did it through hard work and sheer effort.
Even when we discover that people are rich, we never think it is from effort; it is likely because they gamed the system. The Nigerian dream is to game the system and do nothing. That is why corruption and fraud are commonplace.
It never used to be like this, and not all Nigerians currently think this way, but a majority now do, thanks to the madness Nollywood has infected the society with, in the name of entertainment. Now, we are too far gone.
I'll also say this as someone who grew up on the nice side of the barbed wire fences and high gates in the very nice part of town where the Nigerian 0.1% live - learn to touch grass and worry about yourself because rich people really do not care about you. Like, at all.
The Nigerian rich don't even like each other. They barely tolerate one another and make practical alliances to preserve wealth and influence. And now that the economy is too small to support all the children of the Nigerian 0.1%, nearly everyone I grew up with in the nice, leafy part of town now lives in Toronto or London or wherever. You, Mr N250k/month Union Bank contract staff are not part of rich people's thinking at all.
At. All.
The rich have no plans for you. They have no plans to create opportunities for you. They have no plans to fix the things they broke on their way to building that N1bn townhouse in Parkview Estate. They have no plans to contribute towards making society better. If Satan came from Hell with a tail and horns growing out of his head and he ran for political office, the rich would all go make deals with him - because in the world of the rich, the only thing that matters is their own interests, and making sure that they never, EVER have to live like you or next to you.
So all this simping and vicarious fawning over wealth and fame that you people do everyday is the most redundant thing in the world - the rich have no intention of expanding their circle to let you in, and they have no intention of enabling the conditions for you to create your own independent circle of wealth. The only thing the rich need from you is to be poor and obedient, so that your labour can be cheap, plentiful and replaceable.
Statistically as a Nigerian, you will NEVER be rich or close to it. You will NEVER live in Maitama. 99.99% of Nigerians who have existed since 1960 have prayed and fantasised about becoming rich, and 99.99% of those prayers and fantasies never came true. That's just math. You will never be a rich and famous celebrity. You will never be a successful content creator. You will never make millions shilling crypto, trading Forex, sports betting, or whatever the fuck is the latest quick wealth fantasy in town. It's just not going to happen.
That being the case, a much more constructive use of your time would be to fight for the material elevation of what you actually have, where you actually have it. Instead of daydreaming about the N300m house in Lekki that 3 generations of your family cannot buy, get involved in a local effort to give your own immediate neighbourhood a facelift, or a political campaign to pressure the state to build high quality social housing.
If you hate being harassed without consequence online, instead of vicariously enjoying how a celebrity has used their wealth and influence to jail someone for making a horrid tweet, fight for a judiciary and legal system that is transparent and accessible to all, so that a singer living in the UK on a global talent visa doesn't get to have more access to your Nigerian justice system than you who lives in Nigeria 24/7.
Instead of building your mental architecture around the false idea of being a "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" who will someday take your rightful place on Banana Island, touch grass tonight and accept that it will never happen, and what you need to do instead is fight for where you are to become a better, more liveable place that you no longer wish to escape from. Stop cosplaying as rich folk. Stop cooing and fawning over rich folk. Stop daydreaming about someday "blowing up" and buying a house next to Burna Boy. Rich people have no intention of sharing their world with you. Free yourself from the tyranny of living vicariously through people who don't care that you exist.
Them no really send any part of your papa at all.
If you are broke and the first thing that comes into your mind is selling property to make more money, then you are walking on very dangerous terrain. It is not a sustainable way out of the problem of insufficient income.
If you now have to sell the property to pay off debts, then maybe you should seriously consider a career change and give up entrepreneurship.
I have seen former "big men" go through this phase and finally be saved when they open up, and their friends rally around them. This is why African politicians will always support corruption. Their income is never enough to sustain their lifestyle.
This is also what leads to all the bad side deals in the private sector and why they exclude outsiders from their circle.
For those in sports and entertainment, it is brutal. When Davido mentioned that his Dad would send him $300k after a show, I laughed because the man probably knows his burn rate and cash cycle better than anyone.
You can't plan a life around doing one-off deals, but you can plan a life around working with a group of people to generate constant income. The reason the Lebanese, Indians, and others are better businessmen in Africa is that the business groups they form are equivalent to corporations, with proper support and planning.
We have cooperatives, but they don't function the way the Lebanese and Indians in Africa do theirs. Most people in our cooperatives are typically there for emergency loans or crisis support. They don't see them as an active business organization that is responsible for their regular income.
An Indian friend I grew up with was one of the richest people I knew, but was also one of the most frugal. Any fancy car he was driving was usually one that he imported for sale. He was the one who wanted me to buy houses in Calabar almost 30 years ago at 100k Naira each, but I didn't see the value then. He bought several and housed his staff there.
He was always "switched on" and in moneymaking mode, and we did some interesting deals together while he still had his factories selling regular cheese balls and biscuits. That regular income from those factories was sacrosanct. Those were his core products; the side deals were for extra income.
For me, those side deals were my main source of income until my cousin, Lateef Belo-Osagie, made me see the folly of consulting and tech deals. He told me to go and get a job. I struggled with this until I took the course at HBS with @JosephBFuller, who gave us the truth about consulting and services. It was a zero equity game.
Find products to build and sell daily, or join a corporation or group that does. The lawyer guy who kept his 9-5 in the tweet I quoted earlier is very smart because a constant income source lets you plan better. The best business people I know sell something almost every hour. Sometimes, every minute.
If you don't have more income coming in than outgoing expenses, you are definitely going to end up in financial trouble. If you are in a group that does business together, you should all aim to generate regular income by selling products consistently.
Before we were chased away from the POS agent business by those with more resources, my dashboard showing regular income from those transactions used to give me more joy than anything else. These days, it is Stripe. Each sale gives me joy.

Changing your life is not a glow up. It is drywall dust in your throat and a calendar you keep even when no one is watching. The amount of locking in it takes will make you feel strange to yourself. You will think you are becoming boring. You are becoming accurate.
Morning at 5:43. The phone wants to be a god. You make it a brick. Face down, silent. You drink water that tastes like nothing and call it medicine. The kettle clicks. Your stomach argues. You write three lines that are not for beauty, only for honesty. Today I will do this. Today I will not do that. You put the paper where your eyes cannot avoid it.
Discipline is a door you lock from the inside. It is not anger. It is not romance. It is a hand on the knob every time your own nerves try to run. At 7:08 you say no to an invitation that would feed your vanity and starve your work. You do not write a paragraph to be forgiven. You put a plate in the sink and hear how steady the water sounds when it hits porcelain. That is what a boundary sounds like.
You build lanes so your thoughts do not swerve. Two hours for focus. Forty minutes for the body. Ten minutes to breathe without turning it into a ceremony. You hate the first fifteen. You keep going. Your mind flails like a fish and then remembers it is in a river. The clock becomes less of an enemy and more of a metronome. The cursor blinks. You put in the reps no one claps for.
At 13:20 you eat real food at a table. Not a celebration, a promise. Protein, something green, salt that doesn’t flirt. You chew until you remember you have a jaw. The small pain at your temple relaxes. You put your phone in a drawer and the drawer does not scream. You are training your life to stop biting you back.
There is the breaking point time. 16:37. You want the old sugar. The old scroll. The old person. You stand up. You walk to the sink. Cold water on wrists until the skull cools half a degree. You say out loud not like this. The urge is still there. You keep your hands busy anyway. You wipe the counter. You take out the trash. You do not argue with the weather inside you. You wait until it passes, because it always passes when you do not feed it.
Locking in looks ridiculous from the outside. You cut your own hair with cheap scissors because appointments cost time you need for the page. You leave a party at 21:02 because your sleep is a mortgage you do not want to default on. You set your clothes out for the morning like a child and call it respect. You become the kind of person who knows exactly where the tape measure lives. You stop losing your keys because you stop pretending you are the kind of person who loses their keys.
Discipline is not a mood. It is a manual. Write your rules on the fridge where recipes go. No phone before sunlight. One hard thing before noon. Eat sitting down. Apologize by fixing it where it broke. Move your body even when your head is loud. Put your money where your time needs to be. If you relapse, you do not perform grief for an audience. You start again at the next minute mark. Return is the muscle.
At 18:55 you go where your breath changes shape. The track that smells like rubber and rain. The cheap gym with a fan that clicks. The stairs in your building that count for you. You do the ugly reps. Your legs fill with the good ache, the kind that takes noise out of your head. You are not chasing a body. You are chasing a nervous system that can hold a day without cracking.
You will look arrogant to people who worship permission. You will look obsessive to people who have never been in love with anything that did not immediately love them back. You will be misunderstood by everyone who needs you to stay the character they cast you as. Let them keep their theater. You are busy becoming…
