As a new board comes in ask yourself "how can we help this board start off strong?" A prepared board is a board that benefits the school and kids- the whole reason we're all here. Set aside the desire to walk away and help the new board, if for no other reason than the KIDS.

How's your board holding up? Tension rising? Tempers flaring? Might be a good time for a morale boost! Try a change of scenery - meeting over coffee rather than at the school. Plan some team-building fun, such as an escape room. Relieve the stress before year-end chaos sets in!

Have a nagging feeling that parents are burned out? Sit down with parents, teachers, principal - anyone willing - and have an open chat. Keeping your group’s goals front and center, discuss how things are going, how parents are responding and what you can do.

Keep your goals front and center. Earning money for school laptops? Put that on every communication to remind parents why they’re hearing about yet another fundraiser. Write it on a poster board at meetings for everyone to see and remember why they’re here.

Let’s get ready for spring events and clean out those closets! Inventory what you have and make lists of what you need for your spring events. You can even be super nice to next year’s board and make notes of what will need replacing next year 😁

As we lean into the 2nd half of the school year, check in with your budget and stay on track. Forgetting the budget makes it too easy to make last-minute stress-induced decisions that may not be the most fiscally responsible ideas. Your budget is your friend 🥰

PTOs: Enlist middle and high schoolers in need of service hours to provide free child care during meetings. Some kid-free time can be a big draw! For a double win, have someone bring snacks for the kids... and parents.

Create your calendar and sign ups for the year as early as possible- before school starts if you can. Throughout the year, keep them up to date and send reminders frequently.

Incentivize meeting attenders and volunteer signups with raffle drawings! You could do a small drawing for each meeting/volunteer opportunity or have parents earn tickets throughout the year for one big drawing at the end.

Be as specific as possible with volunteer opportunities. Rather than “carnival volunteers”, specific tasks such as "emcee", "scheduler", or "decorator" give unsure parents a chance to see where their skills may be useful.

#FundraisingFriday: Offer volunteering incentives - e.g. free admission for their kids, or lunch supplied for volunteers and their kids. You can avoid someone not helping because of stress: “I can’t afford tickets for my kids to attend” or “what about feeding my kids?”

#ThursdayThoughts: What were your trepidatations when you first volunteered (unsure where to go, sign in procedures,...)? Share your expertise with potential volunteers to encourage them to sign up.

#WednesdayWisdom: Busy parents going from work to kids’ events struggle with volunteering - as we all know too well. Offer an option to help with social media! A parent may not have time to help with concessions, but could tweet the football game.

#TreasurerTuesday: Keep CSB in the loop when waiting on mail from the bank (e.g. filed fraud claims, debit cards ordered). Bank mailings arrive at the district office addressed simply to "CSB". It's as easy as sending Erin an email: [email protected]

#MondayMeeting Add students to your meetings! PTOs: students can give an update on upcoming school performances. Boosters: students can update on past/upcoming events. Bringing in the kids keeps the focus on why everyone is here: the kids😁

#WednesdayWisdom: Fielding calls & emails 24/7? Setting "office hours" can help you draw boundaries. Let everyone know you can be reached only during these times - but also don't let yourself check emails/texts,etc. outside of those hours.

#MondayMeeting: Have some fun with themed meetings. It can be as simple (everybody wear yellow!) or creative (represent your favorite Disney character in honor of our upcoming Disneyland performance!) as your board has the time and energy for.
