Imitation isn’t just the sincerest form of flattery. It also plays a key role in early brain development.
You probably know that your baby is an expert observer.
But did you know that as they watch, their brains activate in ways that correspond with the actions they see, even before they act them out?
According to research from the University of Washington’s Institute for Learning and Brain, when your baby watches you manipulate a toy or other object with your hands (for example), their brains activate in the regions that control the movement of their own hands? And as they watch your feet… you guessed it.
It’s pretty amazing, really.
I just love how this little apprentice mirrors mom’s actions. It’s another reminder of how babies closely follow our lead. There’s nothing your baby wants more than to be just like YOU.
