🌍 Today, 5 June 2026 is #WorldEnvironmentDay2026!
From source to sea, our environment is connected.
Every piece of litter, every pollutant, and every drop of contaminated water can move through rivers and estuaries to the ocean, affecting ecosystems along the way. Understanding where pollution comes from, how it moves, and its impacts is key to protecting these interconnected environments.
#TeamCSIR works to monitor and understand these connections, providing the science needed to support healthier environments for people and nature. Together, we can help protect the ecosystems that sustain us.

The push for African environmental data tools amid storm and oil spill risks
#Earthobservation experts in South Africa, Madagascar and Mauritius say early-warning tools are needed to manage oil spills, typhoons and coastal flood risks off Africa’s eastern and southern coasts, and they are ready to build them. South Africa plans to lead the effort through #TeamCSIR, building on a nearly decade-long pan-African project that used satellite data to support fisheries, aquaculture, ship traffic monitoring, sea rescue and coral bleaching monitoring in the Western Indian Ocean.

Watch: #TeamCSIR and the University of Nairobi are turning skin cells from African donors into stem cell lines for global medical research – the goal is that future medicines work better for Africa's unique and diverse genetic profiles. As part of the CSIR-hosted African Cell Initiative™, the skin cells will first be converted into stem cells and then into nearly any type of cell required for early testing of therapies to treat a range of diseases.
The CSIR brings pluripotent stem cell and cell line generation expertise to this partnership, while the University of Nairobi brings extensive clinical trial experience and East African skin cell donor networks.
This project is funded by the South African Medical Research Council, in partnership with the UK Research and Innovation Medical Research Council, carried out through a multi-institutional collaboration spanning Africa and the United Kingdom.
