CUIMC affiliates standing up for patients, research, students, academic freedom, & science everywhere. Views ours, not stances of CU admin. Repost ≠ endorsement
We published our 6 Calls to Action for the CU Board of Trustees: https://t.co/bG2fwsDhsB
“We are at a crossroads in history where we can either succumb to authoritarianism or stand up against it.”
️ Last week, a group of Columbia professors — most of them Jewish — took a stand. Risking reprisal, they publicly rejected the university’s recent incorporation of a controversial definition of antisemitism. Their statements can be read in full at https://t.co/P9fz2egda1.
TODAY! 4–5:30pm ET

By The Specter Editorial Board
“Columbia must resist narratives that single out some students for protection while ignoring the suffering of others…The current lopsided treatment of students by this administration regarding the war in Gaza risks worsening the very divisions it claims to address.” (6/6)
Out today in the Columbia Spectator — faculty from CUIMC Stands Up & CU Faculty Alliance reframe the narrative about antisemitism at Columbia through an analysis of the HEALS data. Read it here ⬇️ (1/6)

‼️🚨WHAT’S AT STAKE: Higher ed “has long served as a necessary counterweight to authoritarianism…
But…only if universities support discourse that includes dissent and uphold their core values of inclusion, equity, and academic freedom consistently, not selectively” (5/6)
“But, looking at this agreement, one has to think that it wasn’t worth it. What value is there to saving lives and extending them if these lives are lived in a world of restricted speech, arbitrary arrest, and cheerful physical violence?”

Thank you to Rise Up, Columbia for the astute analysis and for the shoutout to CUIMC Stands Up!
We’re a group of medical campus faculty & staff firmly AGAINST the exchange of our values for grant funds, even with our jobs at risk.
https://t.co/YY2hsXJa5a
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves:
“I don’t think the values of the Trump administration are the values of the Columbia medical faculty. In fact, I am certain they are not. We have made a deal with the devil. Those don’t usually work out.”
We can confirm ‼️
At Columbia, we’re also facing layoffs that threaten integrity of our research + diversity driving our excellence. We need ACTION to protect academic freedom, scholars, & research.
We demand our leaders:
🧬 Protect science
🔬 Preserve innovation
👩🔬 Support education & research
Proposed cuts will have “a catastrophic effect on the advancement of biomedical and biotechnology capabilities in the United States,” more than 100 leaders of biomedical/health sciences companies tell Congress. https://t.co/Zi9yFhKrPE
So far ~250 Columbia affiliates have signed a petition to remove Shoshana Shendelman from CU Board of Trustees + boards @ CUIMC & VP&S: https://t.co/7pZNQnk6mT
After an FDA warning letter ‼️ she allegedly misled investors re: company prospects.
Details: https://t.co/3ft2IvPuPo
We will also be adding photographs of LEQAA KORDIA, a Palestinian woman arrested last year at a protest outside Columbia, now held in detention in Texas, as well as DYLAN & DERLIS, two NYC high school students also in ICE detention. We hope their communities will join us.
This week’s vigil will be at 116th & Broadway tomorrow (Monday) at noon. All are welcome, bring a friend or colleague!
We will again be holding photographs of ALL targeted students. They’re out of detention, but still targeted with attempted deportation for political speech.
Still thinking about the official Columbia Medical Center @ColumbiaMed X account posting about the “importance of collaboration” between pharma and Make America Healthy Again as if MAHA is a legit org and not a gov. committee & broader movement both widely considered unscientific
@ColumbiaMed has many obesity medicine docs, dietitians, etc. who study health outcomes re: nutrition. Trustee Shoshana Shendelman isn’t one of them. She’s been sued for fraud (hiding FDA concerns). Faculty have a petition to remove her from CU leadership: https://t.co/hD7Gj1nKJ1
@ColumbiaMed@ColumbiaPS MAHA also isn’t your typical community health org. It’s a politically charged initiative tied to RFK Jr., with a shaky scientific foundation and commercial interests. Columbia should be more transparent about who they’re using their platform to promote.
