I’ll stand by everything I know. 90% of games under Amorim I would genuinely wonder how we lost them. Because there are games where you can’t blame the manager and it was like that under him. Now after carrick’s honeymoon last season we are back to conceding goals like u12 footballers. It’s very simple there’s a chunk of mentality in that team and it lies with the old players. Until you get all of them out things will never change

Since the Ballon d'Or was opened to players of all nationalities in 1995, the award has largely been a battle between La Liga and Serie A

Before the Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel ionel Messi domination and before Serie A fell off, it was almost always Spain and Italy dominating the conversation

You can't dominate the Premier League and expect to win the Ballon d'Or, you need a European title to strengthen your case

This is not the case with La Liga or Serie A

Only three players have won the Ballon d'Or in the Premier League era, all of them had a European title

• Michael Owen in 2001
• Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008
• Rodri in 2024

In 1999, Rivaldo won the Ballon d'Or ahead of David Beckham, despite Beckham winning the treble with Manchester United

That was the first rude shock

Michael Owen's 2001 victory was a surprise to many beating the likes of Raúl González and Oliver Kahn

Well, Liverpool won five trophies that year but I don't want to believe he won because of that

In 2008, Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or after an extraordinary season, but Manchester United winning the Champions League was a massive part of his case

I would even argue that without that Champions League triumph, his chances of winning the award would have been reduced

We all saw what happened in 2023 when Erling Haaland despite winning a treble lost the award to Lionel Messi

Rodri's win in 2024 that people still say he didn't deserve to win it ahead of Vinicius Junior was a battle of power at the top that allowed him win.

UEFA and Real Madrid's President Florentino Perez were at loggerheads

UEFA partnering with Ballon d'Or for the first time in history only used that to let Perez know that they own the game

That was how Vinicius Junior was denied a Ballon d'Or win

This isn't a battle of which league is better, it has always been like this

The Champions League achievement is the better achievement in modern day football. And if you disagree with that statement, then you're living in the past.

And I want all of you to ask yourself why was the World Cup always seen as the biggest trophy in football? It was because in the past this was the only trophy where all of the top players in football came together and played a tournament.

Just look at the 1970 World Cup. The final was Brazil against Italy. Now look at the clubs that these players played for. Every single player in the Brazil squad played in the Brazilian league. And every single player in the Italy squad played in the Italian league. And that's how it used to work. All the best players were playing in their country, so the best players were all spread around the world. And the World Cup was the only time they would come and play together. That's why it used to be the best trophy in football.

So now think in modern day football, which is the competition where all of the best players in the world are all playing against each other at the top level? It's the Champions League. That's because all of the best players in the world, regardless of where you're from, you will end up in one of the best teams in the world, which all play in Europe. That only happens in the Champions League, not the World Cup.

Just think about the best player in the Champions League last season. He didn't even get to play in the World Cup. Just think of all the elite players in our generation: Bale, Lewandowski, Ebra, Eto'o. Elite players year in, year out in the Champions League, but never got a chance to perform in the World Cup, either because they never played in it or their nation was not good enough for them to do anything in it. I mean, just look what Prime Ronaldo had to play with in the World Cup.

Now, all these elite Champions League players never had a chance of winning a World Cup. But that's not the case the other way round. Think of all the best World Cup players. Here's the World Cup Golden Boots over the years: R9, Klose, Müller, James, Kane, Mbappé. Silver Boot: Rivaldo, Crespo, Villa, Müller, Griezmann, Messi. All of these players also played for elite European clubs, and so were playing in the Champions League.

That's why when you're comparing two individual players, what they've done in the Champions League is more important than what they've done in the World Cup. But due to transfers, the Champions League guarantees the best players in the world playing for the best teams in the world. Therefore it's even at the very highest level of football.

In the World Cup, elite players are not playing in the tournament based on where they're born. And other players are playing in it, but they're playing in much worse nations, again based on where they're born, that doesn't have as high quality players. And the teams are not as even as they are in the Champions League.

When people say, 'Oh, he's won a World Cup, but he hasn't,' that makes him better. They're just living in the past. Because what made the World Cup the best tournament in the world was it was the best players against each other at the highest level of football. And that tournament in modern day football is now the Champions League.

Ronaldo has more goals than Messi because Ronaldo played more matches. Have you ever asked yourself why Ronaldo played more matches? The easy answer is Ronaldo started first is a lie. Ronaldo played more matches than Messi because Messi was a failure. Messi could not succeed where Ronaldo was succeeding. Don't worry, I have evidence. Let's start with the Champions League. Ronaldo has more appearances than Messi in the Champions League. Why? Because Messi kept getting knocked out. Ronaldo made it to eight semi finals in a row. Messi never achieved that. Where Messi would fail, Ronaldo would succeed. Ronaldo kept on going to finals while Messi was getting knocked out by Roma, Liverpool. Ronaldo was making it to semi finals, quarter finals. Messi was not making those levels. That's why Ronaldo has more appearances because he was good enough to keep qualifying. On international level, Ronaldo never retired, Messi retired. That's why Ronaldo kept playing more matches and scoring more goals. Are we being for real? Deadliest injuries, Messi has missed over 200 matches in his career due to injury. Ronaldo has only missed like 60 to 80 matches due to injuries. So Ronaldo only played more matches than Messi because Ronaldo was simply better. We make it look like, ah, Ronaldo started first. Yes, Ronaldo started first. Ronaldo only played 30 matches before Messi started his career. And doing those 30 matches, guess how many goals Ronaldo scored? Five. So your goat cannot compete with somebody that scored five goals in 30 matches, eh? Let me even make it worse. Ronaldo scored 23 league goals. Let me repeat it. 23 goals in four years. That's who Messi cannot catch up with. And you guys are proud to come out and say Ronaldo played more matches.
