Another interesting fact is that the destruction of Hindu temples and shrines in Portuguese-controlled territory was authorized in 1540, only three decades after Afonso de Albuquerque's conquest of Goa

Not a single pre-Portuguese Hindu, Buddhist, or Jaina temple from the Velhas Conquistas (Tiswadi, Bardez, and Salcete) of Goa is still standing.

Although some Portuguese (especially Jesuits) engaged with the lexicography/grammar of Konkani and even composed Christian works modeled on the Purāṇa tradition, the damage they did exceeded their contributions.

As per Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino, the Franciscans destroyed 300 Hindu temples in Bardez in a single year.

The Jesuits set the village of Assolná ablaze before marching onto Cuncolim, burning it down, slaughtering a cow, and profaning the tank of the Śāntādurgā temple by sprinkling it with blood from the viscera of a cow.

The Dominicans comprised the majority of inquisitors in the ecclesiastical tribunal at Goa and had acquired a reputation for forcibly abducting non-Christian (especially Hindu) "orphans" at Diu from the arms of their relatives and raising them as baptized Christian believers (any child whose father died was legally deemed an orphan by the Portuguese, even if his/her mother was still alive).

The Portuguese forbade the use of Konkani in conducting contacts in 27 June 1684 and ordered that the local population switch to Portuguese within three years.

They even imposed a discriminatory religious capitation tax on non-Catholics called the xenddi, which was comparable to the jizyah tax on non-Muslims in Muslim territories.

The tax applied in both the Velhas Conquistas and Novas Conquistas and was not abolished until the mid 19th-century.

Relative to their territorial possessions, the Portuguese were equally destructive to Indian heritage as the Turks, yet hardly anyone speaks about it.

While British forces damaged, demolished, and looted much of Delhi in 1857 (the destruction was substantial enough that parts of the pre-1857 urban fabric disappeared entirely) and blew up several Maratha forts, their contribution to the study of Indian heritage (Prinsep's decipherment of Brāhmī, Cunningham's establishment of the ASI, etc.) outweighs the damage.
