Teacher numbers plummet despite Labour's 'vindictive' private school tax to pay for more

Teacher numbers have fallen by 1,900 in the year since Labour came to power despite the new VAT on private school fees designed to fund 6,500 extra teachers.

Official Department for Education figures for 2025 show 466,372 full-time equivalent teachers in state schools, down from the previous year.

State-funded nursery and primary schools lost 2,900 teachers while secondary schools lost 500. Special needs schools gained 1,100.

Labour introduced the 20% VAT on private school fees to raise £1.7 billion a year by 2029-30 specifically to recruit more staff for the state sector.

The government says it is already 70% of the way to its target and points to record-high teacher retention and a 13% rise in new trainees.

Shadow Education Secretary Laura Trott called it “another broken promise” that is piling pressure on state schools.
