The “Falling Man” was never officially identified, but…

The “Falling Man” was not one photo. AP photographer Richard Drew shot a sequence of about a dozen frames at 9:41 a.m. on 9/11. In later frames the white shirt blows open and an orange T-shirt shows underneath.

Journalist Tom Junod spent years trying to put a name to the man.

The strongest match: Jonathan Briley, 43. Sound engineer at Windows on the World. 6’5”. Black high-top shoes. Coworkers and his brother recognized the build, the shoes, and the orange shirt he wore so often they used to tease him about it.

His body was recovered. His sister later said she was not certain it was him.

Whoever he was, he had a name, a job, and a family. He was not a symbol. He was a person.
