Sadly, Norwood's gipsy community was victim to increasingly persistent persecution from the authorities including strict vagrancy laws & the enclosure of the commons. By the end of the 1800s they had been forced away from the area that had been their home for so many years.

This is an illustration of Margaret Finch, known as 'Queen of the Gypsies' of Norwood & after whom Gipsy Hill was named.

It is said Margaret was 109 when she died in 1760 & her granddaughter & nice are recorded as living in the area into the 1800s.

Roberta Cowell was the UK's first male to transition with gender confirmation surgery.

She grew up in Croydon & attended Whitgift School, later becoming a racing driver, spitfire pilot and prisoner of War before she transitioned after WWII.

Sadly, Roberta lost contact with her children after she transitioned & struggled financially.
