tip of the iceberg. I'm also eager to share our other works soon as I believe
they will have far reaching impacts.
I consider base conversion an important yet largely unaddressed area of study
for computer science. There's a lot more work to be done regarding
generalization and efficient transcoding.
We've deployed these principles to disciplines outside of QR codes. For
example, by using our arbitrary base conversion libraries, https://t.co/UaGovea7xd's database
backend is 100% efficient. It is informationally impossible to store data more
efficiently.
Arbitrary base conversion is especially useful for cryptographic digests, as
they have a small and known size (for example, 256 bits). This limits the
amount of computation needed for conversion. Compute is cheap; keeping
storage costs down is more significant than ever.
Instead of depending on compression for storage efficiency gains, as most of the
industry currently does, further gains are only realized by efficient encoding.
One method of realizing efficient encoding is base conversion.
Since cryptography is informationally efficient, compression results (on
average) in **larger** outputs. You read that right! Compressing cryptographic
payloads results in larger, not smaller, outputs. Compression is useless for
cryptography.
