Maybe it’s time to start looking for a new hire

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz [Donut clung to them in return, stifled cries turning into sobs.]

[He’ll be embarrassed when it’s over. He’ll probably apologize and go back to keeping it all to himself like he usually did. But that was something he would worry about after the fact. Not right now.]

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz [Donut didn’t push away. He just cried and let Songbird grab him because the knowledge that this was someone who cared was comforting.]

[This was going to feel embarrassing when the tears finally stopped, but he couldn’t care about that in the moment.]

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz She’s the reason I survived the fall that day. She used her body to shield me from the ground…”

[Donut reached up to wipe away tears, but more just fell in their place. He couldn’t stop himself from crying anymore.]

“I… I was still a child…”

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz “She didn’t want to lose me when I was kicked out, so… she chose to fall to Craterdust with me.“

[He sniffled, hands gripping at his jacket as he struggled not to cry.]

“…She didn’t make it.”

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz [Donut took a deep breath. It’s just Songbird. They wont tell anyone else.]

“I used to have a caretaker, back in Splintered Skies. A ranged gear named Cupcake Launcher.”

[He hasn’t said that name in years. Though she wasn’t just a caretaker. She’d basically been his mother.]

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz “. . .”

[He shouldn’t have said it back then. He got so caught up in his emotions that he let it slip out. It was a mistake, but he didn’t get a chance to pretend it didn’t happen.]

“That’s… going to need some explaining.”

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz [Maybe… maybe it won’t be so bad to tell just one other inphernal?]

“Go ahead.”

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz [Donut held up a hand in a quick, quiet refusal. Smoking wasn’t his thing.]

[He was already expecting it to be something about what happened. Songbird was super observant, plus he did slip up with his words.]

+

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz [And just like that, the lightheartedness faded. Donut started fidgeting with his sleeves.]

“…So.”

[He didn’t know where to even begin, or how. How does one just talk about something they’ve refused to speak on for years?]

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz [Donut let out a quiet chuckle at the boast. Not to say he doubted it, though. Songbird would be a good caretaker if he did get sick.]

[And it was nice having something lighthearted, considering what this conversation was actually going to be about.]

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz [With the door being held for him, Donut stepped outside first. It was definitely dark, but at least he wasn’t out here by himself. Songbird actually knew how to fight, and he trusted them.]

“Good call with the jackets, it’s pretty chilly tonight.”

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz “Yeah, one second.”

[The door opened soon after. Donut stepped out, closed the door, and looked at Songbird.]

“I’m ready.”

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz [Donut had just slipped into his own jacket when Songbird knocked. Admittedly, he’d been slow to actually get ready for this walk. It wasn’t that he didn’t feel ready to talk, because he did! He’s just never been so vulnerable and open about his problems before.]

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

@tweetweetgo2zzz Yeah, I’ll grab my jacket.

[Donut @D0NUTDELIVERY]

[On the counter are two large cupcakes, wrapped to stay fresh and decorated to match with the inphernals they’re meant for. One is vanilla, the other is blueberry, both with sprinkles that resemble music notes.]

[Each one has a spawnday card with it.]
