The NBA Election: A Defining Moment for the Bar

In the next 48 hours, over 83,000 lawyers across Nigeria will cast their votes to elect the next Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). This is no small feat it is a laudable exercise in collective decision-making and professional democracy. Yet, as inspiring as the process may be, this year’s election has not been without controversy.

The debate around Egbe Amofin’s push for a consensus candidate for the presidency, and the alleged attempts by the Attorney General of the Federation to interfere in the Association’s internal affairs, have stirred unnecessary distractions. While such interventions may be cloaked in altruism, they remain avoidable and risk undermining the independence of the Bar.

Despite these challenges, the three presidential aspirants deserve commendation. For the first time in NBA history, candidates have campaigned with such vigor traversing the length and breadth of the country, visiting branches, and passionately soliciting votes. Their determination, deep pockets, and relentless energy have set a new benchmark for electioneering within the Association. Each has worked hard to outdo the other, making promises and pledges to uplift the profession.

But promises alone do not make a leader. Implementation is the true test of vision. The Bar needs not just eloquence, but a veteran with a listening ear someone who understands that beyond subsidizing subscriptions to Nigerian Weekly Law Reports or sponsoring young lawyers to conferences, the most meaningful support is opening doors to opportunities.

This is where Aare Muyiwa Akinboro stands out. Over the years, he has consistently helped lawyers young and old alike secure briefs, particularly with institutions like INEC. Such gestures, rooted in genuine empowerment, are unmatched by any other candidate. It is no surprise that some have tried to downplay his contributions; yet, the impact of his efforts speaks louder than any rhetoric.

As lawyers prepare to vote, I urge every member of the Bar: study the manifestos carefully. They are your compass. Align with the vision that best suits your professional interest. Do not be swayed by empty platitudes or grandstanding. Remember, no candidate is a messiah; leadership is about service, not promises.

The NBA deserves leaders who will not only speak but act leaders who will not only promise but deliver.
