This thread about the UK doctor training system comes from an international lens and sums up why strikes are happening. Resident doctors aren’t just asking for more pay but an overhaul in the whole pathway.
Oh my, this is is brilliant from @RobLaurensonD4P
🚨 Strike action has cost the govt £3bn
🚨 Full pay restoration would have only cost £1.3bn
🚨 Re 35% demand - a physician’s assistant is paid 35% more than a fully qualified doctor 🤬🤬🤬
As a consultant oncologist this is hugely worrying.
A 🧵.
Somehow the UK is elevating PAs (w/ 2 years basic training) to a level expected of a doctor with 5-10 far more rigorous years of training and exams.
First, Victoria Atkins says doctors strikes caused 1.3 million appointments to be cancelled. Dr Vivek Trivedi explains that 12 million appointments were cancelled when there was no strike action
Then, Victoria Atkins says doctors walked away. Dr Vivek Trivedi explains they didn't
This Conservative government wants you to hate doctors who want a pay rise from £15 an hour to £20 an hour.
Hi @BimAfolami
Happy to chat about how your government have shut us out of negotiations
And even now, with no strikes, they still won’t negotiate with us
And how previous to striking we were basically told we’d be ignored until we had a strike ballot

'The reality is I'm facing unemployment because physician associates are taking locums in some places.
@TomSwarbrick1 hears from a frustrated doctor who can't fathom how physician associates can 'earn more, a lot quicker' than some doctors, even though they're less qualified.
I'm leaving my current role in a community hospital due to safety concerns that have not been addressed adequately. I'm sharing this because I'm deeply concerned about what is happening in the NHS and I'm worried about the risk our patients are facing.
How is this acceptable @BucksHealthcare?
Doctors are NOT worth half a Physician Associate.
FY1s, this is how they value you. Look how they value your replacements.
STRIKE.

Things are getting complicated with the Astra Zeneca vaccine in Europe. Despite the WHO saying it’s fine to use, Germany, France and others have suspended its use. We’ve looked at why and why some scientists are ‘baffled’. Produced @michaelcoxJ https://t.co/X1aeUdDabo
Final year UK med student here. Going public with some experiences of a compulsory online exam. Summary: students threatened with disqualification from becoming doctors (in a pandemic) due to problems with online exams (incl. some being forced to urinate in their seats)
The mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) are kind of brilliant at a science level. I’ve had a few people in my real non-Twitter life ask me to explain how it works so I’m going to try my best here in this thread while I’m waiting for a patient to show.
