89-Yr-Old Imo Man and Son Sentenced to Death

An 89-year-old man, Pa Everestus Okereke, and his eldest son, Ugochukwu, are facing execution in Imo State after spending a decade behind bars for a crime allegedly committed by another relative.

The tragedy began in 2016 when Pa Okereke's younger son allegedly fled after a fight resulted in another man's death. Authorities detained Pa Okereke and his first son in place of the missing suspect, and both were sentenced to death by hanging in September 2022.

NIGERIAN ARMY TROOPS PAY SOLIDARITY VISIT TO SUPER EAGLES IN GUINEA-BISSAU

Nigerian troops serving with the ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission to the Republic of Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB) have paid a solidarity visit to the Super Eagles ahead of Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the host nation, the Wild Dogs.

The Commanding Officer, NIGCOY 5, Lieutenant Colonel Afam Junior Chidi, led the troops to the team’s official training session at the 24 September Stadium in Bissau on Monday evening, where they met with Acting NFF General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, and other members of the Nigerian delegation.

The visit underscored the camaraderie between Nigerian troops serving abroad and the national team, while providing an opportunity for the soldiers to encourage the Super Eagles ahead of the crucial qualifier in Bissau.

Nearly 8.3 million refugees and other forcibly displaced people face losing vital assistance from UNHCR, the UN’s refugee agency warned Tuesday, as protection services crumble due to “severe” funding cuts.

“UNHCR’s ability to protect and assist refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and stateless people is being eroded by a sustained and worsening funding shortfall,” the agency said in a report detailing the human cost of budget cuts.

The Edo State Special Criminal Court is currently delivering its maiden judgement in a kidnapping case.
The verdict is being delivered on an 11-count charge involving four defendants — Marvellous Isaac, Wisdom Michael, Rufus Emete Michael and Gift Raphael.

The defendants are facing charges bordering on alleged kidnapping, conspiracy, armed robbery, cultism and unlawful possession of firearms.

8 cows killed, 74 stolen as suspected Mwaghavul militia attack herders in Mangu, says victims

At least eight cows were reportedly killed, 17 others and two sheep injured, while 74 cattle were allegedly stolen during an attack by suspected armed Mwaghavul militia and their accomplices at Lamor, Lawet, in Pushit District of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, according to victims

The incident reportedly occurred at about 8 p.m. on Sept. 27, 2026, according to information provided to Zagazola Makama.

Victims of the attack said the attackers, who were reportedly heavily armed, targeted livestock belonging to herders in the area before fleeing with the stolen cattle.

The incident has raised fresh concerns among residents and livestock owners in the area, particularly because it reportedly occurred about two weeks after another attack in which three herders were allegedly killed and about 50 cattle stolen.

The latest incident, if confirmed, would represent another serious escalation in attacks involving livestock and rural communities in Mangu, where recurring violence has continued to deepen mistrust between communities.

The Federal Government, Plateau State Government, Mangu Local Government Council and security agencies are urged to urgently investigate the reported attack, establish those responsible and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.

Security agencies should also strengthen surveillance and patrols around vulnerable settlements and livestock routes in the affected areas to prevent further attacks, cattle rustling and possible retaliatory violence.

The priority, however, should remain the protection of civilians, recovery of stolen livestock and prevention of another cycle of reprisal attacks that could further endanger both communities.

Residents and community leaders are equally urged to provide credible information to security agencies and avoid actions capable of escalating the situation.

Troops foil kidnapping attempts, rescue 10 victims in Zamfara

Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have foiled two separate kidnapping attempts and rescued 10 victims during ongoing clearance operations aimed at disrupting bandit activities and restoring security in parts of Zamfara State.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the operations were conducted on Sept. 27, 2026, along the Tsafe–Funtua Road and at Kade Daba village in Kanoma District of Maru Local Government Area.

In the first incident, troops deployed along the Tsafe–Funtua Road responded to reports of gunfire around the Kwanoni axis in Tsafe LGA.

The troops moved swiftly towards the area and encountered armed bandits, who engaged them in a brief exchange of fire before being overwhelmed by the troops’ superior firepower.

The bandits subsequently abandoned their operation and fled into the surrounding terrain.

Before the arrival of the troops, the assailants had set fire to a commercial vehicle. The occupants were, however, successfully evacuated, while troops secured the vehicle and prevented further damage.

Six persons in another vehicle that reportedly lost control during the attack were also safely rescued by the troops.

The troops subsequently secured the highway and cleared the affected section to facilitate the safe movement of motorists.

In a separate intelligence-driven operation, troops responded to information about an abduction at Kade Daba village in Kanoma District, Maru LGA.

The troops immediately deployed to the area and engaged the kidnappers, forcing them to abandon their captives and flee.

Three victims were rescued at the scene, while a follow-up search operation in the surrounding area led to the recovery of one additional victim.

This brought the total number of victims rescued during the second operation to four.

In all, 10 persons were rescued from the two separate kidnapping attempts.

The rescued victims are currently receiving necessary care and assessment before being reunited with their families.

The operations underscore the continued efforts by troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA to maintain pressure on armed groups operating along major highways and rural communities in the North-West, while improving the safety of civilians and road users.

The mother of a Fulani herder reportedly killed during an attack at Lawet and Lamor in Pushit District, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, has made an emotional appeal to security agencies to protect her family and other vulnerable residents from further attacks.

In an emotional video obtained by Zagazola Makama, the grieving mother, overwhelmed by the loss of her son, called on the authorities to take immediate action and prevent further killings.

“Wallahi, if you cannot protect us, allow our own children to defend us,” she said, expressing frustration over what she described as the failure of authorities to provide adequate protection.

The woman was speaking after her son was reportedly killed during the attack on herders and livestock around Lawet and Lamor at about 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026.

According to information from the area, the attackers suspected to be Mwaghavul militiamen reportedly used tear-gas canisters before opening fire with automatic rifles, allegedly targeting cattle that had been tied inside enclosures at the residences of the herders.

One Fulani herder was reportedly killed, while the exact number of cattle killed or injured was still being established.

The circumstances surrounding the attack and the identities of those responsible are yet to be independently established.

The mother’s emotional appeal, however, highlights a deeper concern in the continuing violence in parts of Mangu: when victims believe that the state cannot protect them or deliver justice, some may begin to consider taking security into their own hands.

That is precisely the point at which a security crisis can become even more dangerous.

The tragedy is that a grieving family seeking protection can easily become a community mobilised for retaliation if authorities fail to respond quickly and credibly.

At the same time, calls for self-defence must not become a licence for reprisals against innocent people.Every community has civilians who deserve protection, regardless of ethnicity or religion.

The growing frustration among victims also places a responsibility on the Plateau State Government and security authorities to demonstrate, through concrete action, that violence will be investigated and that perpetrators will face the law.

Troops raid terrorists’ enclave, neutralise fighter, recover AK-47 in Sokoto

Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have neutralised a terrorist during a raid on a suspected terrorist hideout in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the operation was conducted following credible intelligence on the presence of terrorists around Karani village.

The troops advanced towards the suspected terrorist camp and, upon making contact with the hostile elements, engaged them with firepower, neutralising one terrorist while others fled into the surrounding forest.

During the exploitation of the camp, the troops recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with live ammunition, one operational motorcycle, military camouflage uniforms, maintenance tools and other logistical supplies.

Following the encounter, the troops conducted clearance operations across the surrounding forest axis to dominate the area and deny the fleeing terrorists freedom of movement.

The recovered weapons and equipment have been taken into custody as troops continue operations to track fleeing members of the group and dismantle their networks in the area.
