most of the time when something happens in a recording artist's life it's all bad. gofundme time. i've long been an advocate of joining your local musician's union (yes, MCs, DJs, and producers can join as long as they are working (putting out records, recording and/or touring) and can prove it. their health insurance is stellar ( i was poor growing up but had the fanciest beverly hills doctors, dentists, orthodontist and optometrist due to my Dad's local musician's union insurance with zero deductible on e'thang).
they also provide life insurance, plus equipment insurance if you're on the road with your gear.
face it most artists rent. you gotta have rental insurance, keep that policy updated, and make sure all of your equipment is insured.
i also advise all artists to take photos of ALL of their equipment, phones, laptops, hard drives, instruments, speakers, etc. and keep notes on paper of all serial #s, etc. plus copies of legal & financial documents in a fireproof safe or safety deposit box.
these things require a tiny bit of money to do, and a lot of effort so you may want to get your wife, girlfriend or sister/mother/auntie to help you with staying organized and up-to-date on all the insurance & record-keeping stuff. plan ahead and do these simple steps - if you get hurt, if there's a fire or earthquake, if you get robbed, or lose something (or everything) on tour it's much better to be prepared for everything.
gofundme is cool and has saved many a life or paid for many a funeral, but the musician's union dues are not that high, insurance is not that expensive, and your future / families' future / children' futures should be cherished enough that you prepare for any eventualities.
if you're an artist and you have specific questions about this, or need help getting some of those things set up, that's what I do! I am a consultant who is also an expert because I've been living this since I was in my Mama's womb, born into music, business and the business of music. [email protected]
Devil’s Pie (D’Angelo Cover) recorded back in 2009/10?! Never shared before because I felt unworthy… but your art & journey made me realize I was and always will be. 🖤 D’Angelo, you meant so much to us. Rest In Perfection.
This is the best Sleep bootleg I’ve ever seen. They’re playing an early version of “Dopesmoker” at the Cat’s Cradle, Carrboro NC ‘94. I guess you don’t 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 to be stoned to appreciate it but srsly, for those partaking, this is the tits. Watch pt 2 below for Matt Pike’s solo⬇️
