The City of Johannesburg has intensified its Inner City enforcement campaign as City Power targets five suspected hijacked bad buildings in Doornfontein and New Doornfontein that collectively owe R4.96 million for electricity.

These operations are about more than recovering revenue. They are about protecting lives by removing illegal electricity connections, tackling electricity theft, and preventing overloaded networks, fires and other dangerous safety risks.

The scale of the challenge remains significant. City Power is monitoring 108 problematic buildings linked to illegal connections, unsafe electrical installations and non-payment, with outstanding debt exceeding R114 million.

Working alongside law enforcement and other City departments, we will continue taking targeted action against those who undermine our electricity network while ensuring that residents have access to safe, legal and reliable electricity.

Earlier today i joined the multidisciplinary High-Impact Blitz Inspection at African Electroplating alongside Deputy Ministers Jomo Sibiya and Mmapaseka Steve Letsike to ensure that our laws are enforced and that workers are protected.

The inspection uncovered serious compliance failures, including unsafe working conditions, inadequate ventilation in areas where hazardous chemical fumes are present, rusted lifting equipment, missing emergency eye-wash stations and safety showers, non-compliant gas installations, shortcomings in labour compliance and record verification, and critical emergency safety concerns, including the need for a compliant second emergency escape route.

The relevant authorities have issued the necessary compliance directives, and operations will only resume once critical safety requirements have been met.

No worker should have to choose between earning a living and working in unsafe conditions. We will continue enforcing the law without fear or favour while supporting businesses to achieve full compliance, protect jobs and build a safer, stronger Johannesburg.

Today, 300 completed homes were handed over to qualifying beneficiaries as part of the second phase of housing allocations at Jabulani Parcel K in Soweto.

The mixed-development housing project involved comprehensive township establishment and the upgrading of bulk and link infrastructure. This milestone reflects the continued commitment across government to expanding access to quality, dignified housing and building better communities.
