Currently in the foundation phase-learning, preparing, and building discipline.
Discipline today. Freedom tomorrow.
Don't despise small beginnings.
My yoghurt dream didn't begin as a billion-naira business.
It began with learning, experimenting, failing and trying again.
Your beginning doesn't need to look like your destination.
Some of you need to accept that the street is not for you. It's very okay to find a partner you are committed to, and love the fvck out of each other.
You're not a player or bad bitch, and that is okay.
One lesson entrepreneurship taught me:
IDEA — PEOPLE — MONEY.
A brilliant idea with the wrong people can become an expensive disaster.
Don't only develop your idea.
Learn how to identify, manage and work with people.
THEY CALLED MY CAR A BASKET; Apẹrẹ, Nkata.😂
Many years ago, while working at UBA, I closed from work around 9:30pm.
When I got downstairs, I met about 20–25 colleagues stranded at the entrance.
The rain was torrential.
Even people who had closed almost an hour earlier were still there, unable to walk to the car park.
The wind was so fierce that umbrellas were almost useless.
My manager was among those waiting.
I looked at everyone, pushed my way to the front and walked straight into the rain.
People looked at me in surprise.
I was completely drenched by the time I reached the car park.
I entered my Nissan Quest, drove it around to the bank entrance and picked up about eight people.
I took them to their cars.
Then I came back.
Picked another group.
Went back again.
I think I made about four trips until everyone who needed help had been taken to their cars.
There was only one small problem.
One of the windows on the right side of my Nissan Quest had an issue, so the wind was blowing a little rain into the car.
But nobody cared.
They were just grateful to get out of that terrible rain.
My manager was one of the people I carried.
The following Monday, while some people were in his office, he jokingly asked me:
“How far with your basket?”
“Basket?” I asked.
He laughed.
He was referring to my leaking car.
Everyone laughed.
Later that same day, something interesting happened.
One of our Directorate Heads told me management had given them new official vehicles.
I jokingly asked him:
“Sir, can you dash me your Mitsubishi Pajero?”
He looked surprised.
“Do you need a car?”
“Yes, sir.”
The Pajero was worth around ₦6 million at the time.
Of course, giving it to me free was a stretch. 😂
Eventually, we agreed on ₦2.5 million.
I raised the money within two weeks and bought it.
Suddenly, the man whose car had been called a “basket” was driving a Mitsubishi Pajero.
And, interestingly, my new car was now finer than my manager’s car.
Then came another comment:
He said the Pajero was too big for my status and that I would look like a messenger driving it.
Well…
That was his opinion. 😊
I had learned something:
Never be ashamed of what you have while you are building what you want.
That leaking Nissan Quest was good enough to rescue people from the rain - including the person who later laughed at it.
Use what is in your hands today.
Use it confidently.
Use it to serve.
Use it to solve problems.
Your current “basket” may not look impressive to people.
But don't despise it.
Life can change very quickly.
“If you’re going to try, go all the way.
Otherwise, don’t even start.
If you’re going to try, go all the way.
This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives, jobs and maybe even your mind.
It could mean not eating for three or four days.
It could mean freezing on a park bench.
It could mean jail.
It could mean derision, mockery, isolation.
Isolation is the gift.
All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it.
And, you’ll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds.
And it will be better than anything else you can imagine.
If you’re going to try, go all the way.
There is no other feeling like that.
You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire.
DO IT. DO IT. DO IT. All the way
You will ride life straight to perfect laughter.
It’s the only good fight there is.”
- Charles Bukowski.
God bless the niggas who are 100x bigger than us and still fuck with us, put us on, and genuinely wanna see us win alongside them.
That shit will always be respected.
