Don’t overlook the goldmine in pig farming! 🐷. While many chase other agribusiness ventures, pig farming remains one of the most profitable yet underrated opportunities out there. Pigs convert feed to meat more efficiently than cattle or poultry, they have large litters, and they reach market weight fast. The profit margins? Impressive, with demand for pork steadily rising.

But why do people shy away? The myth: pigs are dirty. In reality, pigs are one of the cleanest farm animals when given space. They only wallow in mud to cool off (they don't sweat!) and will actually keep their feeding and sleeping areas separate from their waste if you let them. They’re intelligent, trainable, and thrive in well-managed systems.

The real dirt is missing out on this high return, low entry barrier business. Give pigs a chance and they’ll give you a return.

You hit the nail on the head that cost of feeding to market weight is the single biggest profit killer right now. Input prices are volatile, and if you're not watching that feed conversion ratio like a hawk, you're basically farming for the feed mill, not for yourself. But I love that you're already pivoting to producing your own feed. That's not just a cost saver that's a strategic moat. When you control the ration, you control the growth rate, gut health, and even your slaughter timeline.

A little advice as you kickstart this: Start small but scalable.Don't buy a full pellet mill yet. Get a reliable hammer mill and a vertical mixer. Master the mash feed first. It's cheaper and gives you room to experiment with local ingredients (maize, cassava, soy, etc.)

I traded Dublin/North America for Nigeria soil, I didn’t just change my location I changed my entire existence. I moved because I am deeply passionate about farming about the soil about the magic of watching a seed transform into sustenance, and the responsibility of raising our nation’s protein. I believed that moving home to farm was not just a career change, but a calling to contribute to food security.

However, I must confess, I arrived with a naivety that borders on my foolishness. I expected the government to be a partner in this journey. I hoped for grants to ease the startup burden, and for single digit loans to fuel mechanization. The reality was a harsh wake up call.

Omo to my shock, the sector I thought would be celebrated is criminally underfunded and unsupported. The suppor that makes the headlines rarely trickles down to the field. Bank loans come with interest rates that eat up your margins before you even harvest, and government grants? They are ghosts reported on paper, but 99% of them simply don't reach reach us who are the real farmers, us with dirt under their fingernails.

Faced with such system that is corrupt and harsh on farmers. I had a choice give up or get up.

I chose the latter. Today, I stand before you as the manager of a 100 hectare farm project that was built without a single loan and without a single kobo of government grant. Every hectare has been funded through sheer grit, re-investment, and the unwavering belief that Nigeria must feed itself. We are tilling the ground, expanding our poultry, our piggery, our goats, and fish operations to raise our protein, and proving that it can be done.

But it shouldn't have to be this hard. The narrative needs to change. We need a government that sees farmers not as beggars, but as the backbone of the economy. We need support that is accessible, not political. We need loans that don't strangle us, and grants that actually reach the people turning the soil.

To any young person dreaming of farming: do it. But do it with your eyes open. The government may not support you yet, but the soil will. And if we keep pushing, if we keep showing up, maybe one day, they will.

Government should please support the tillers, the raisers of protein. Support the real farmers.

I get asked why I'm expanding during a recession and me not getting the support needed from the government as a farmer and not having access to soft loan or govt grant.

I tell them: Because I have no choice and I am passionate about farming and agriculture in general.

When you're a farmer in Nigeria, there's no safety net. No government bailout. No soft loans. No interest free grants.

Just me. My land. And the weight of my livestocks and crops depending on me.

Every day I wake up, I'm not just a farmer I'm a financier, a logistician, and a prayer warrior. I am at the point of throwing in the towel.

I nor go lie you make a sharp valid point, and I won't dismiss it. But let me counter.

Survival without a growth vector is just slow liquidation.

I agree this is a corporate turnaround, not a farming problem. That means I need cash preservation, cost surgery, and ruthless prioritization. I'll cut non core acres, renegotiate input terms.

But I refuse to see myself only as a distressed CEO. Because a turnaround's endgame isn't breakeven it's a viable go forward model.

My counter… I won't step outside production. I'll shrink it, but I won't abandon it. Because the moment I stop being a farmer, I lose my only real asset the land and what it can produce right now.

Instead of seeing myself as a CEO of a distressed business, I'll see myself as a battlefield commander.
