Last year I read "The German Wife" by Kelly Rimmer. For a long time, I wondered how "good Germans" didn't oppose Hitler's rise to power. How was this vile man allowed to amass so much power without opposition?

That book answered it.

At first, they called him a joke, but then Hitler normalized hate by being openly hateful himself. By the time "Good Germans" realized they had to hide their Jewish friends, it was too late. They were outnumbered by their neighbours who "just wanted to take back their country", and most fell in line to save their own necks.

Many Jewish people who sounded the early alarm were told they were bring dramatic. But week by week, their rights were stripped, not all at once, but little by little, until there were no more rights left.

The world is seeing something similar rise again. Hateful rhetoric, aimed at immigrants and people of colour, threats of purges and mass deportation, accusations of immigrants of bringing crimes and being vectors of disease to "poison communities".

It might seem these words do not affect you because it's not happening in your country, or that it is just politics, but remember, all of Europe and America once thought Hitler was not a serious person.

For everyone who stands by and watches all that's going on in the world and doesn't actively oppose it, because it does not directly affect them, or only affects "immigrants", I leave with you Martin Niemoeller's famous words, "First They Came..."
