Incredible! This is exactly what Afghanistan girls need: a safe, decent space to learn, grow, think critically & build their skills in science, technology & sports.
More power to you & to all the students there. May they fully prepare to come home one day and build Afghanistan.
As August ends, I’m looking back at @solaafghanistan’s five years in #Rwanda – and looking ahead to the hope we’re building. Today I’m so happy to bring you to our new campus: our forever home for Afghan girls.
I am deeply grateful to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 for nominating me as a candidate for Director-General of the World Health Organization, and to The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for their continued support for health in Saudi Arabia and our contribution to global health.
I have spent my career as a pediatrician, infectious disease specialist and scientist — from caring for some of the sickest children to working on the frontlines of MERS-CoV, long before COVID-19.
That experience shaped my belief in the power of science, preparedness and collaboration to turn evidence into action.
I later served as WHO’s first Assistant Director-General for Antimicrobial Resistance and, since 2024, as Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, working with 22 Member States and more than 750 million people.
I am grateful to the colleagues and health workers who have shaped this journey and to the brave and tireless staff of WHO with whom I have the privilege to work.
I believe WHO must earn trust, deliver impact and demonstrate value for every Member State.
I look forward to listening, learning and working with colleagues, Member States and partners around the world as we shape the future of WHO and global health.

The O.I.C has called for women’s empowerment, yet in Afghanistan, the Taliban have spent five years systematically enforcing policies against women & girls in the name of Islam & Sharia. So, what should the OIC do? Here is my reflection & recommendations.

Chatham House Prize 2026 awarded to the women of Afghanistan: “Their courage embodies the determination of a much broader movement for women’s rights and challenges the world not to look away. This award recognises the example they set in the face of extraordinary restrictions.”

August 15:
This group has ruled Afghanistan for the past five years. They are responsible for some heinous crimes: extra judicial killings, forced disappearances, and depriving millions of girls and women from their basic rights. Not once, but twice in 30 years.

Women speak about their lives under the Taliban: their dreams, fears, risks, hopes and determination. "Perhaps, one day, someone will read these writings and know there were people who, despite all the walls, still kept a window open to the future."
