This beautiful hula ‘auana by the wāhine was spectacular! Their lovely red dresses were the perfect backdrop to tell the story of Ali’i ‘Iolani, a classic romantic song to celebrate the love between King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma. 👑❤️👑

"Aliʻi ʻIolani”

This mele honors Alexander Liholiho Kamehameha IV, grandson of Kamehameha the Great, who ascended the Hawaiian throne in 1855. His name translates as "Royal Hawk." The mele was reportedly composed around 1856 to commemorate his marriage to Emma Naʻea Rooke (Queen Emma). While the composer's identity remains uncertain, the music is attributed to Helen Parker.

"Hanalei Bay”

Although born in Waipiʻo Valley on Hawaiʻi Island, the composer Alfred Unauna Alohikea (1884-1936) spent most of his life in Hanalei, Kauaʻi, where he penned much of his mele. A talented musician and renowned baritone, he toured the mainland with the Royal Hawaiian Band, playing ʻukulele, guitar, upright bass, and saxophone.

In 1871, the renowned horse-riding "Queen Emalani" with 100 companions, set out from her Lāwaʻi estate on Kauaʻi and rode the paths above Waimea Canyon, visiting landmarks and vistas along the mountain trek. Poetic overtones of misty rains reflect the tragic loss of her beloved son and husband, while murmuring waters suggest solace in the merriment of music and hula presented by the royal entourage.

A three-time captain for the University of Hawai’i football team (1962-1964), UH’s first NCAA Division I head coach (1974–1976), and a renowned local broadcaster. He was known for his "Katoosh" commentary and as a passionate advocate for Hawaii football. He was 90. Rest in Aloha Coach. #HawaiiFB

Hawaii’s worst rainstorm in decades, by the numbers:
• Up to 46 inches of rain in parts of Maui
• Oʻahu saw 20+ inches, triggering island-wide flooding
• Some spots got hit with 1 to 3 inches per hour
• Honolulu broke a rainfall record from 1951
• Kahului logged its wettest stretch ever recorded
• 230+ people rescued from floodwaters
• 5,000 to 10,000+ people evacuated
• Over 100,000 homes lost power during the storm
• Damage already estimated at $1 Billion+
Officials are calling this the worst flooding in over 20 years.
This Kona low stalled over the islands, pulling in nonstop tropical moisture… and since the ground was already soaked from earlier storms, everything just turned into runoff instantly.
Help Hawaii recover by supporting local when businesses reopen. Be careful of fake fundraisers online. Respect the time and space needed to recover during natural disasters.
