Not celebrating Ntare’s 70th anniversary would be so unfair of me. Ntare played a role in shaping my academic excellence through its selfless teachers, who coached us during the holidays. They opened their library to us, let us read their books, gave us past papers and even gave us access to their laboratories.and then our brothers who were always topics ahead discussed for us😂😂after teaching us their anthem😂
What I remember most is the askaris😂They were always strict with holiday intruders, but one day one of them asked which school I was from. When I told him I was from Bweranyangi, his face lit up with a big smile. He said, “Ohhh, welcome, our sister.”

Seventy years ago, on the hills of Mbarara, a bold idea took root.

In February 1956, a young school founded by Scottish educator William Crichton opened its doors with a vision that would outlive generations. What began on Kamukuzi Hill before finding its permanent home atop Ntare Hill soon became far more than a school—it became a forge of character, leadership, and excellence.

Named by Omugabe Charles Gasyonga II after the legendary Ankole king Ntare V, the school inherited the spirit of the lion. From its earliest days, Ntare stood apart as one of Uganda’s pioneering secular institutions, guided by a simple but enduring challenge: “Better Your Best.”

Over the decades, the Den has nurtured thinkers, innovators, sportsmen, statesmen, and leaders whose influence stretches far beyond its gates. Yet, beyond the achievements and accolades lies something even greater—the unmistakable Ntare Spirit: a culture of brotherhood, intellectual curiosity, spirited debate, and the quiet confidence that greatness is never inherited, but earned.

As we count down to the grand celebration of 70 years of Ntare School on 25 July 2026, we begin a journey through the moments, traditions, personalities, and stories that shaped one of Africa’s most iconic schools.

This is only the beginning.

In the days ahead, we will revisit the founding years, the legendary houses, the great rivalries, the unforgettable characters, and the generations that carried the lion’s roar across the world.

The story of Ntare is still unfolding.
