On This Day in Metal August 12, 1989

The Moscow Music Peace Festival kicked off at Central Lenin Stadium in Moscow, USSR!

This historic two day festival brought together some of the biggest names in hard rock and heavy metal, including Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne, Scorpions, Skid Row, Bon Jovi and Cinderella, alongside Soviet rock act Gorky Park.

More than 100,000 people attended, with around 120,000 tickets sold across the two days. Some estimates put the overall crowd even higher. The festival was also broadcast live to 59 countries, bringing this incredible moment in rock history to millions around the world.

Taking place during the glasnost era, the festival was about more than music. It promoted peace and understanding between the West and the Soviet Union and raised money to help combat drug and alcohol addiction.

For many fans, it became known as the “Woodstock of the Soviet Union.” It was a landmark moment when Western metal and rock stars shared the stage in Moscow during a period of enormous political and cultural change.
