#BREAKING Five major shipping companies raked in an astonishing US$103.3 billion in profit last year, a staggering increase from the US$6.2 billion in 2019, as reported by the International Longshore & Warehouse Union Canada (ILWU). Let's take a moment to really digest those numbers. In the face of a global pandemic, when millions were struggling to make ends meet, these corporations exploited the chaos to their advantage, dramatically raising shipping charges to inflate their bottom lines.
Now, as thousands of workers stand united, demanding fair wages and job security, these same corporations have turned to their government lobbyists, pressing for legislation to send the workers back to the docks. The audacity of these corporate giants, not content with their pandemic-induced windfalls, now look to leverage governmental power to break a lawful strike is mind-boggling.
Such a move would be a massive embarrassment for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Party. With the NDP resolutely opposing any back-to-work legislation, Trudeau could find himself at the mercy of Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party. This political conundrum places Trudeau between a rock and a hard place, a situation of his own making, given his government's cozy relationship with big business.
Meanwhile, in a remarkable show of solidarity, U.S. unions just announced that they are refusing to handle the cargo being rerouted from Canada. This unprecedented international unity within the labor movement underscores the gravity of the situation and amplifies the stand against corporate greed.
The lines are drawn, and one cannot help but wonder if our leaders are prepared to push against these corporations. It's high time they stopped being part of the problem and started being part of the solution.
At the end of the day, these companies are effectively holding Canadians and the broader North American economy hostage. By refusing to engage meaningfully with the workers' demands, they are choosing profit over prosperity, shareholders over workers, and corporate interests over national interest.
This isn't just a Canadian issue; it's a stark warning to all of us. If we allow corporations to dictate the terms of our economy, we risk turning our backs on the very principles that underpin our society: fairness, dignity, and the value of hard work. This isn't just a fight for the workers in B.C.; it's a fight for all of us."
