Canada’s greatest weakness may be its arrogance, the belief that we remain a global example simply because we keep telling ourselves we are.

We boast about our healthcare, institutions, economy and moral leadership while ignoring the dysfunction, declining services and falling standard of living right in front of us.

Patriotism is not pretending everything is fine. It is caring enough about your country to confront reality, demand better and do the hard work required to rebuild it.

Canada’s reputation cannot survive indefinitely on nostalgia and self-congratulation.

A country that believes it is above criticism will soon find itself beneath the standards it once claimed to represent.

She grabs the girl and smashes her head into the wall twice. You hear the thud, she hits the back of her head and drops out cold while everyone just stands there filming.

This isn’t some little fight. She could’ve cracked her skull.

The Conservative Party of Canada has launched a campaign encouraging Albertans to stay in Canada.

It is worth being honest about what is going on here.

Alberta is the Conservative base.

Most of the party's safest seats are in this province. If Alberta leaves, the CPC loses its path to government. That is not an attack. It is just the math, and it explains why this campaign exists now.

Albertans should ask a different question. Not whether the CPC wants us to stay, but whether staying actually fixes anything.

The Conservatives governed Canada for nine years, four of them with a majority. They are good people who wanted to help Alberta. But look at the record.

Senate reform did not happen.

Equalization did not change.

Alberta's voice in Ottawa did not grow.

That was not a failure of effort. It was a failure of the system.

Real Senate reform requires a constitutional amendment.

So does ending equalization.

So does any permanent change to how Ottawa treats Alberta.

An amendment needs seven provinces representing half the population. The provinces that receive equalization hold enough votes to block it.

That means the provinces receiving Alberta's money would have to agree to stop receiving it.

That is not going to happen. Not under a Conservative government. Not under any government.

So the choice in front of Albertans is not Conservative or Liberal. It is whether we keep asking a system that cannot say yes, or build one that can.

Independence is the only path that does not depend on Ottawa's permission.

That is not about being against Canada. It is about Albertans finally being able to solve Albertan problems.

They come from different parties, different political stripes, different backgrounds, yet not one has produced a credible plan to fix Alberta’s grievances.

The reason is simple: they can’t.

The problem is structural. Independence is the only mechanism that fundamentally changes who holds the power.

People, it has been a journey but we have just published the Alberta Transition Plan.

More than 40 volunteers gave their time, their insight and their thoughtful commentary to build a base of over 300k words and 900 pages of researched material.

The conclusion?

This Alberta Transition Plan examines a practical question: What would have to be done to make the transition to independence orderly, lawful and workable?

Alberta would not be starting from scratch.

Alberta already has a functioning government with most of the services Albertans depend on every day already functioning.

Some we can use as they are.
Some we have to enhance and extend
A few need to built.

None of this is impossible.

All the services and functions we need are being done all over the world every day.

Give it a read. Think on it.

You'll be convinced we can do this.

Here are all the times Liberal MPs broke ethics rules since 2015—and what their puninshments were

With the Ethics Commissioner's ruling on Lori Idlout's ethics violations yesterday, ELEVEN different Liberal MPs have now been found in violation of ethics rules on TWELVE separate occasions.

It's easy to forget them all, so here's a convenient list:

1. Kate Young (2016)
Liberal MP Kate Young became the first Liberal MP to be found in violation of ethics rules after Trudeau's election when she wrote a letter to the CRTC asking them to renew the license of her former employers at CTV London.

Result: NO PUNISHMENT

2. Justin Trudeau (2017)
Justin Trudeau infamously took a vacation on a private island owned by a personal family friend whose foundation received $50 MILLION from Trudeau's government over the previous year.

Result: NO PUNISHMENT

3. Bill Morneau (2017)
Justin Trudeau's then-finance minister Bill Morneau was caught failing to disclose the existence of a villa he owned in France. He claimed that he forgot about it.

Result: $200 FINE, remained as a minister

4. Dominic LeBlanc (2018)
While serving as Trudeau's fisheries minister, Dominic LeBlanc abused his power to get a surf clam license for his wife's cousin.

Result: NO PUNISHMENT, remains in cabinet to this day

5. Anita Vandenbeld (2019)
During Ottawa's municipal elections in 2019, Vanderbeld sent our robocalls instructing her constituents to vote for her husband for city council by invoking her status as an MP.

Result: NO PUNISHMENT, remains a parliamentary secretary to this day

6. Joe Peschisolido (2020)
Failed to properly disclose matters involving his shareholder's loan, corporate liabilities, the dissolution of his law corporation and his marital status, resulting him found in violation TEN TIMES.

Result: NO PUNISHMENT

7. James Maloney (2020)
Maloney failed to complete his required disclosure statement even after given a deadline extension.

Result: NO PUNISHMENT, remains a committee chair to this day

8. Bill Morneau (2021)
In a second instance of violating ethics laws, Bill Morneau infamously abused his office in order to give WE Charity preferential treatment. It has long been believed that he helped cover up ethics violations by Trudeau and other Liberal MPs during this scandal.

Result: FORCED TO RESIGN

9. Yasmin Ratansi (2021)
Liberal MP Yasmin Ratansi was caught repeatedly using taxpayer dollars to employ her sister in her offices.

Result: NO PUNISHMENT

10. Mary Ng (2022)
It was found that trade minister Mary Ng was abusing her ministerial portfolio to award government contracts to a personal friend of hers.

Result: NO PUNISHMENT

11. Greg Fergus (2023)
While serving as the Speaker of the House, Greg Fergus abused his position to pressure the CRTC to provide "mandatory carriage" status to a television station.

Result: NO PUNISHMENT

12. Lori Idlout (2026)
Earlier this week, Lori Idlout was found to have spent taxpayer dollars to support a business owned by herself, as well as a bed-and-breakfast owned by her husband.

Result: NO PUNISHMENT

She stood before a room full of adults and asked them to protect her and other children because she feels scared and uncomfortable.

That is not hate.

Children should be allowed to tell adults when something makes them uncomfortable, and parents deserve a say in what their young children are exposed to at school.

I welcome the Canada West Foundation report as a important contribution to an important debate about Alberta’s future. It identifies many legitimate issues that would have to be addressed in a transition to an independent Alberta. The Alberta Transition Council’s transition plan identifies many of the same issues.

Where we differ is in how those issues are treated.

Too often, the Canada West analysis takes an uncertainty or negotiating risk and then assumes a worst-case outcome and ignores Alberta’s powerful leverage. Identifying a risk is not the same as demonstrating that it cannot be planned for, negotiated or managed.

Alberta would also not be a “start-up nation” in the ordinary sense. We already have a functioning government, Legislature, courts, police, health and education systems, regulators, infrastructure, businesses and highly skilled professional workforces. Independence would require transferring or replacing certain federal functions and establishing a limited number of new sovereign functions. It would not require rebuilding Alberta from scratch. It's about changing the constitutional order so that Alberta becomes responsible for its own future, under a government elected by Albertans and possessing the full constitutional authority of an independent country over its laws, finances, institutions and national decisions.

Interestingly, Canada West’s own business analysis acknowledges that trucks would likely keep running and flights would plausibly continue while arrangements were negotiated. Its constitutional analysis also emphasizes the need for governments to prepare negotiating teams, mandates and contingency plans in advance.

On those points, we agree.

Canada West also acknowledges something important that should not be lost in this debate: Alberta’s grievances within Confederation are real and legitimate. The report recognizes Alberta’s disproportionate fiscal contribution, equalization concerns, project delays, federal energy and climate policies, inadequate representation and comparatively low levels of federal investment.

But after acknowledging those problems, the report offers no concrete or enforceable roadmap for ensuring they will actually be fixed. Its answer is essentially to remain in Canada and continue pressing Ottawa for change. Albertans are entitled to ask the obvious question: after decades of making many of these same complaints, what gives us confidence that Ottawa will finally address them?

The right response to uncertainty is not fear. It is preparation.

That is precisely why the Alberta Transition Council has spent months examining these issues in detail. Later today, we will release our Alberta Transition Plan publicly so every Albertan — including our critics — can read it, scrutinize it and challenge its assumptions.

Our objective is not to pretend that independence would be effortless. It will be a substantial legal, governmental and operational undertaking. The question is whether those challenges can be identified, planned, sequenced, negotiated and managed while essential services continue and ordinary life carries on.

We believe they can.

Albertans should read both reports, examine the assumptions behind the numbers and make up their own minds. This decision is far too important for slogans, fear or unquestioned worst-case assumptions.

Voting Option 2 gives Alberta a chance to do better.
