Open offices in professional spaces are so preposterous. They are conjured up by managers and designers who imagine the creation of some mythical "collaboration." In reality, everyone shows up and claps on headphones or lives inside their earbuds and you have to practically stand on top of people to get their attention, which they resent. The effect of the open office is exactly the opposite: it forces deep retreat into intensely private mental spaces to escape the creepiness of the whole mandatory public experience. It's a paradigmatic example of how reality defies the planners.
