Beauty Looks Different
Some say the essence of beauty
lies in the alignment of things
with an implied, unblemished ideal.
But I feel this is only partially true.
Beauty looks different to me now,
in learning to love the scars.
Seeing it only in perfection
untethers beauty from being,
from presence, from the real.
Beauty surges with sap.
Beauty beats with blood.
Beauty leaks down into the eyes,
and thus is beheld.
Unknowingly lacking this insight,
I bear the guilt of having erased
the face of beautyโs priceless portrait.
If we are to truly feel its texture, we must
dare touch beautyโs blemishes, finding,
within them, the wonder of our woundedness.
Beauty looks different to me now
when I see your face or see myself
in the cracked mirror of the world.
