I’m sure you have seen cracked watermelons on your farm. If you haven’t, this is for you. It’s not a disease, it’s a disorder and once it happens, you cannot fix it. The only solution is prevention.
What causes watermelon fruits to split?
1.Inconsistent watering: Stick to a steady watering routine. If you irrigate twice a week, keep it consistent. Avoid random watering.
2.Excess water: Too much water, especially when fruits are almost mature, causes cracking.
3.Calcium deficiency: Calcium strengthens fruit cells and helps them hold longer. Apply calcium-rich fertilizers.
4.Sudden temperature change: Rapid shifts between hot and cold stress the fruit and lead to splitting.
5.Use of Ammonium Nitrate during fruiting: Avoid applying Ammonium Nitrate once the first fruits appear. It causes rapid internal growth, leading to cracks.
